Not counting the 17", can you find any differences between the 2 machines besides the casing and screen size? What happened to the pci card slot????

Graphics card - as in, the Macbook doesn't really have one.

I use both the MB Pro 17 " and the white MB ( 1.83 Ghz ). The main difference is the dedicated graphic card. But to be honest, that difference is hardly noticeable unless you do 3D stuff, editing with FCP is just as fast on the cheap MB. I also use digital Performer and Protools on both of these machine for Live and in the studio. Again, i don't find the MB any slower that the MB pro 17". Both of these machine outperform my desktop dual processor 2Ghz G5. I was very surprise how well the low end MacBook performs, considering it's 1/3 of the price of the MB pro 17". The biggest hic right now is that Apple has a major problem with the Macbook. I had my MB replaced 3 times and i'm still getting the dreaded random shut down. Even though i really like the machine, i had to return it for a refund...hopefully, they will figure out what the problem is soon !!!! |

i'm not too crazy about the "chicklet-style" keys on the mac book. it looks like they could seriously hinder your typing abilities. i prefer the regular-style keys on the mac book pro.

i agree - the keyboard of the Macbook reminds me of the late ZX-Spectrum series from the mid-80ties | |

I love my macbook, just added a extra gig and it rocks for Protools. Next step, a 7200rpm internal drive. One thing though, I think I will be adding an external screen as editing on the 13.3 display is a bit tiring on the eyes... I've found this on the bay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...MEWA%3AIT&rd=1 Cheap with decent specs. Anyboby use this? Anyway, apart from screen real estate I dont why I would spend an extra grand for the macbook pro, they're essentially the same machine as far as audio goes... Cheers,

Maybe already covered, but the MBP has waaay better internal speakers, which can be nice from time to time, and the 17" one has Firewire 800 in addition to the previously mentioned express slot and video chip. I'm still opting for the MB, but I'm waiting for the Merom release... Mike |

WAIT! Sept 12th is Mac Expo Paris. I would hold off on any purchase until you know your options on the Duo 2 Merom processor upgrades. Most rumor mills think the Merom upgrade will only go to the MBP and iMac, but Apple could upgrade across the board for MacBook, MBP and iMacs with various processor speeds. I'm getting ready to buy 2 MacBooks, but I'm holding off until I know all my options. If Apple does not upgrade to Merom in the MacBooks, then I'm getting 2 MacBook 2.0 Ghz Core Duo refurbs for $1099 each. If they do upgrade to Merom, I'll probably spend the extra money for the upgrade, but there will also be price drops on the existing line-up on both MacBooks and MBP's |
