As a follow up to a thread that was kindly started here is the 'official' FXpansion Mixing with BFD guide.

It contains , tips , hints , rants and raves and some examples and links to audio.

I hope it will be of use to our users.

Thanks GFX. I saw it on the site this weekend and it brought a big smile to my face...I'm really glad to see a company follow through with their promises. I've printed a copy off, now I just have to find the time to do some reading.

Very welcome ,

Obviously its not the de-facto way to mix drums (i would say there isnt one), its just what works for me with real drums , I apply the same techniques to BFD as well.

I am sure someone will say no no no its all wrong!

But thats just life

Hope you find it useful and thanks

Hey GFX, does this guide contain the procedure for permanently modifying the level of playback of specific kit pieces? I remember a post on the KVR forum which someone from FXpansion went through the procedure for this since some people complained of inconsistencies in kit piece levels.

Thanks!

Nice job mate. Really helpful to see how you mix drums. Thanks.

By the way, I notice you use the duende. What do you think of it?

I've heard opinions range from "nothing special" to "best digital eq ever!"

I'd love to hear what you think. Thanks.

A very nice guide! I notice you use the Duende. . . what did you use for your 'verb example?

Hi ,

Duende , is a decent sounding box with good features on the Eq's and compressors.

I dont want to get involved with a whats better product X or product Y.

My honest belief is peopie get WAY to involved in those types of discussions. Unless your involved in recording at the highest level , the truth is its really hard to make a bad recording these days. If you have the skills youll get a good sound out of anything.

Ive always thought its more about what you do , than what you use to get there.

But this is GS so a little sluttery is allowed

It is simple to use , sounds more than good enough to me thats about all I need to know.

I like the way the Eq feels to use , absolute arguments about the sound pale when an Eq responds like an Eq should. I havent gone back to back with it against anything else.

It works , sounds plenty good enough is versatile. What more do you want!

The verb example was using the Eventide Orville reverb plugin again arguably not the greatest reverb on the planet but its all about context imho.

It does the job sounds good and has lots of flexibility.

Cheers

lots of great tips in there man. great work.

I loved the mono/squashed PZM one. combine that with the rooms at max width and you can have a real big rock drum sound.

And don't forget running the stereo BFD bus out thru a nice pair of mic preamps. It can be pretty nice.

Hello all GFX nice one man,

things like this simply don't come from many other manufacturers, if ever. Good to see the love being shared in mad moments clarity and humility. Loads of goodies in there and a little bit of honesty wow, what is the world comming to.

I was looking into BFD and DFH and have decided to go BFD. One of the main things that tipped me was the great support and care that the people at BFD give. But I must admit the new Andy Johns expansion pack had a bit to do with it too

A big thank you from NY too! The tips given were amazing. The only think I would add is in your DAW you can group your kicks or snares and then when you use effects you will use less CPU with one compression on the kicks or other part of the drums. Amazing tips. I have to pay off my Apogee Rosetta 800, and then I will get the XFL package. Can't wait!

i just happened upon this...gracie GFX...BFD is just the gift that keeps on giving!

@Max Cooper, out of curiosity, what pre are you using to run the stereo buss into? I'm assuming since this is mainly an effect type of thing you got something really colored slapped on it...and are you using just the pre or are you squashing it too? I'm looking forward to trying this out.
