Insurance for an iLok?? I NEED IT!! help please....

I have just purchased a bunch of plug-ins that use the iLok for authorizations. The purchases included a bundle from WAVES.

Waves states on their website that they WILL NOT re-authorize in the case of a lost or stolen iLok. They recommend insuring the iLok and the licenses on it.

Does anyone have experience with this? What kind of insurance agent/company does this? I would guess that few insurance agents have heard of an iLok; how would they give you a reasonable quote on a $40 dongle?

If there is anyone on these forums who has their iLok insured, your response and experience would be greatly appreciated. I imagine there is more than $2k worth of authorizations on my iLok and I need to get it insured. But with who? And how?

Thanks in advance,
J.D.

I think you'd get the quote on the value of the dongle + the software on it at full retail purchase value, but you'd first have to convince an insurance company to actually do this. Personally, I haven't done it [yet] but I'm now in the same boat as you (although I'm in the UK so we probably can't use the same insurance firm). In any case, I just bought the Renaissance Maxx bundle, fully aware of the fascist Waves polices re: iLok and WUP, but it's something my clients want and need occassionally when I dry-hire my facility.

That aside, what I've decided to do it put the Waves stuff on its' own iLok (which I think at one point Waves recommended or maybe even required anyway) - that way hopefully I can keep my insurance premium as cheap as possible, and should there be a technical problem I only have to send the Waves iLok to Waves - not the whole thing with all of my other plug-in assets on it, so I won't be out of operation completely.

Anyway, keep me posted, I'll be watching this thread.

as waves dont use ilok.com i think thats something everone should be doing. it would keep insurances costs down.

ilok.com will insure all your other licences with their Zezo Downtime coverage, if its gets lost, stolen or broken all you have to buy a new ilok and you can sync it.
i havnt done it but it looks like a good system, only about 30 bucks a year, and best of all no waiting you just start using another ilok.

We had a waves ILok stolen at Hit just before closing. I was upset at the time, but hey, companies sometimes get a litte o what they deserve. The sad part is that I always use a krypton lock to secure the ILoks to the computer and I don't know why someone put that in a room w/ no lock.

Anyway, ILoks downtime thing didn't cover stolen ILoks

Really? Did you point out to them that according to ilok.com they do?

Quote from that page: When a covered iLok breaks or is lost or stolen, log in to iLok.com and go through the RMA process for the affected iLok.

In the future, if you don't need to use your iLok on more than one machine, you can mount your iLok(s) on the inside of the case. I have done this with mine. Basically, you can take a usb adapter (the kind that has the wires that go to the usb hookups on the motherboard that covers a PCI slot). Get rid of the PCI cover, but keep the wires. Then just attach your iLok(s) to the inside of the machine with velcro. This way, you won't kick them and nobody will make off with them in their pocket. I read about this on SOS and thought that it was a great idea. I have mistakenly kicked my iLok before (not a good thing), but luckily it kept on working.

There's another thread already discussing this, but..
I guess you didn't actually read everything on the ILok lost/stolen info. This is the remainder of the lost/stolen quote:
"If you have ZDT coverage (or purchase it now), you will receive temporary licenses. However, because we cannot verify the exact contents of your iLok, we cannot provide you with a replacement iLok containing your previous full licenses. You must contact the software vendors and work with them to receive replacement licenses. We can verify to the vendors that the iLok has been reported to us as being lost/stolen.

I submitted an RMA request saying that my iLok was lost/stolen. What happens now?
A new blank iLok can be bought from a local dealer or from ilok.com. Replacement licenses will need to be obtained from the vendors. (See previous question.) No further action is taken from ilok.com other than the depositing of temporary licenses to your account if you had Zero Downtime (ZDT) coverage.
"

great thread. maybe there's an insurance selling slut... group buy?

i would think something like a stolen ilok would be hard to convince an insurance co. to cover, but if anyone has a lead on one, i'm in! my place has very little outside traffic but i'd buy the insurance anyway.

I had a stolen ilok and all the licenses were replaced.
An ilok has an electronic serial number.

My clients' ilok with the music production toolkit and factory bundle went missing. I called digi and they informed me it would cost $450 to reinstate the licences. He decided to look for it some more.

You mean your plugins you purchased werent fully registered? wouldn't digi have that all on file in the digi store since they sent the authorizations to your ilok in the first place?

The Music Production toolkit comes with 2 cards one is for the ilok license activation the white card is for registration of the software.
Same with say a 003 factory there would be 2 registration cards one for the 003 and one for the Factory software bundle. There would be an additional registration for the Ignition Pack software as well.
Those reg. cards are very important fill them out - it is easy online and the site will let you mutiple registrions at once.
Without doing this any company does not know what you have registered.
Just because it's on your ilok it does mean the software is registered in your name.
If your buying used software and there is no reg. transfer or no registration card (or emailed serial no.) you are S.O.L. for problems listed above.
That is why some (not all) software on ebay is so cheap from sellers - no registration transfer is available on certain used plug-ins.

Certain ones, yes, although iLok part-justifies their $25 transfer fee (seems high to me too) by saying that they transfer user/registration information to the relevant vendor. Guess maybe they either a) don't or b) the vendors don't care and don't update records.

Most companies don't allow transfer of ownership of a single plug-in from a bundle. But I would think that if it was a retail plugin you would still have to fax a transfer of ownership form.
