Processor speeds and RAM, help please.

I am buying a computer for DAW recording. I won't run any Plug-in or virtual instruments at all, this is strictly for tracking. What kind of processor speed and RAM requirements will I need?

assuming win7

8 gig ram for any long play recording
nearly any modern processor, tracking is NOT processor intensive at all
track count depends on Hard drives.
1 drive can do 100+ @48k

Thanks. So I should be more concerned about having sufficient RAM instead of having the fastest processor? Now does having more cores ever come in to play with tracking?

How many tracks at what resolution?
A simple i5 handles most modern tracking standards. Stability and redundancy are the important tasks here.

Not more than 16-20 tracks approximately, sometimes less. I would like to go 96k/24-bit, though since I don't use plugs that might be overkill.

For this, you can even use an i3. It can be extremely compact as well.

Good to know, thanks. Is AMD advised against? Does anybody pay attention to those passmark ratings or are those not audio-oriented tests?

Also, is there any disadvantage to laptops? Should a laptop not be used unless necessary?

The problem with laptops is that you never know in front whether they will work flawlessly for audio without dropouts. They all are consumer products with hardware revisions, one generation might work, the other maybe not. The manufacturer is not checking them for audio use since audio is a very small market for them.
When buying a laptop, get one from ADK (USA), AAVIM (Australia) or Apple.

I think i will go with a desktop. I suppose an All-in-One might experience the same problems as a laptop then?

Would you only go with Intel-based computers or are AMD processors also reliable?
