Upgrading processors? Greetings, Slutz. I'm interested in upgrading my processor--currently an AMD 3200+. In layman's terms, what can I expect as far as improvements? Will I have to re-auth all my plugs? Am I cool as long as the MOBO supports the chipset? If I'm going to do this, I can't afford to be down for very long. Any thoughts appreciated--I'm a gittar picker, not a computer expert. Thanks, CAA

Is that processor really not cuttin' the mustard anymore? unless you know you need to throw more processing power at your system, I'd leave it alone. Unfortunately, everyone's plug-in authorization scheme is different. If it's made well, It'll read your Network card's NIC address, rather than anything from your CPU. Also generally, things won't get a whole heck of a lot better with just a CPU upgrade. the actual swap out should be simple. Check the firmware of the motherboard. new firmware may support chips not availible when the board was manufactured.

Grab the manual for your motherboard. If you dont have it, go to the MFR website and get it. It will tell the processor family and the fastest chip you can use. If you want a newer processor (ie: different family), you will probably have to buy a new motherboard. If you do this you will have to reinstall Windows and re-authorize plugs. (hope you dont have Waves plugs ). It is much easier to stick with the same family of CPU your board supports and buy one from an online retailer (try using pricegrabber.com)
