Software or VST to change key

I posted this on the Sonar forum but not much, other than what I already knew.

I occasionally get singers that want to record with Karaoke tracks. I don't have any software (or hardware) that will change the key on the tracks. I found PCDj Karaoke (I have a 15 day trial) and it will do it but the price is $100. That is relatively high considering I wouldn't be using it very much.

Question, is there a less costly software alternative available (other than the CNet downloads which I reuse to do because of all the extra garbage I'm forced to download). Or is there a VST, that I coiuld use with SONAR to do this?

Thanks/Jack

You can do it with Sonar itself:

I tried the Pitch Transpose both on one track and on a mixed down track (what I would be using - a mixed backup track) and neither did well. The single track was a little better but that is not what I need.

The referenced article is for Sonar 6. There have been many changes since Sonar 6. I'm currently using Sonar X2 (the latest version).

I also have Pro Tools MP9, although I rarely access it. How about Pro Tools or an RTAS?

Well, if you're trying to change the pitch on an entire premixed track it's going to sound weird no matter what (unless you're just going up or down a semitone or two). If you have access to the multitracks then you can pitch shift just those tracks that have pitched instruments but again, it will sound weird (i.e. noticeable artifacts) if you're shifting more than a few semi tones. My personal favorites are Cubase's built in Vari-audio and the zPlane Elastique Pitch plugin. You can checkout the zPlane plugin here: zplane -- Elastique Pitch

I've used the PCDj Karaoke, tested it on wav and mp3 files and it will transpose and not make it sound "funny".

I don't have separate tracks to work with on a Karoke tracks disc, its a mixed backup track with everything except the singer.

The Elastic pitch looks nice, but it is $199 - that's double the price of the PCDj Karaoke.
