Hi guys,

I am new to digital mixers and mixing out of the box, so please forgive my ignorance and stupid questions...

Is anyone of the opinion that the tascam dm3200 or 4800 is nearing its expiry for consumers? I've noticed it's been around for a while and want to avoid buying a lemon that will have obsolete features within a year or two!

Is anyone able to explain how an entire mix-down works in relation to the DAW via the firewire card? Does one mix down the stereo or surround mix via firewire to be recorded by the DAW, end of mix down story?

Is it possible to link up an analog summing unit to the channels / busses?

Any help would be so appreciated!

Yes it is being replaced with a new model but not sure when. If you get the desk and the firewire card then you have 32 channels of in \ out into your DAW and DAW automation on the Tascams remote layer via the HUI standard. I think this alone makes it worth the cost and this part of it will never be obsolete, at least no more obsolete than any other audio interface or HUI controller

You can mix down by sending 32 tracks out of your DAW into 32 channels on the Tacsam via it's firewire card and then record the digital output of the desk into something, I use a Tascam SSR-1 records to CF cards when taking this approach

Or you can sum in the box by just using 2 channels of firewire for monitoring stereo bus

Summing in analog is a bit tricky as the only way I know to get analog audio out of one is to use the in \ out analog card for 8 out, and maybe the 8 aux sends for another 8. I don't think there's any way to use the inserts as the firewire returns come back post insert point I think ?

Maybe someone else knows about the inserts ?

Thanks for that XJR

I'd be interested to know what tascam would be replacing it with..

I was also thinking along the lines of the aux sends, but hadn't thought of the analog outs - I'm assuming it's possible to route the daw to those?

If the inserts could be used that would open things up a lot..
