*sigh* eBay buyer wants money back because he didn't read, what would you do?

Hi all,

So I just sold a Digidesign 192 Digital on eBay. The buyer received it yesterday and now wants to send it back for a refund because he thought it was an analog 192 not digital. My eBay listing title said it was digital, the item description said it was digital, there were two pictures of the front label that said digital and the back showing the AES digital output cards. When I sent the Paypal invoice the subject line was "Digidesign 192 Digital." I don't want it back and feel like I was very clear with what I was selling.

What would you do?

If your listing specifically says no returns, let him challenge it and be rejected by paypal. Clear documentation in multiple places is enough to CYA.

My listing didn't say no returns but I don't feel like I should have to take it back because this person didn't read the listing.

As rough as it is, it was his own fault.

I used to sell a lot of stuff on ebay and generally I would take stuff back just because I felt it was the right thing to do. But there were times when I felt that it was the wrong thing to do and I didn't take it back. So you have to do what you think is right.

The only bad feedback I've ever gotten was from a girl who bought a t-shirt from me and she felt that it took too long to get to her, and a guy who decided after the auction that he was going to change the terms of the deal, and another girl who bought three magazines from me and insisted that I combine shipping even though my ads said that i would not. (all the mags were pre-packaged and ready for shipping.) There was nothing I could do for the girl, 17 shirts went out that same day, the post office somehow lost track of hers for a time, but she got it. She posted bad feedback before even talking to me. There was nothing I was willing to do for the obnoxious guy who wanted to change the deal. I refused to sell the duplicator to him and offered it to the next closest bidder. The girl who wanted me to combine shipping? That ad was clear and she was a dealer, so she had no excuse. On the other side of the coin, I sold a beautiful Silvertone Dan Electro Twin Twelve guitar amp, complete with Silvertone tubes to a fellow. I had a shipping crate built for it to protect it. Someone in shipping must have dropped it off a truck. The fellow who bought it sent me an email asking if the chassis was bent and the tubes were broken. I took it back. When I got it back and opened it up I almost cried... it had been 100% when I shipped it out, it was junk when I got it back. I ate the loss, the insurance wasn't close to the real value plus i ate the shipping costs, but it was the right thing to do.

I had a buyer demand a refund on what he described as a faulty Apogee Mini-Me I sold him, which was not described as such and so I was an unscrupulous seller.

I took it back, refunded him and surprise, surprise it was in perfect working order... and still is, just as it was when I double-checked it before selling it.

I think Paypal makes it too easy for people to do this because of the protection for buyers. There doesn't seem to be any protection for honest sellers against dishonest buyers though.

As a buyer and seller... im done with ebay. As the middleman they always come out on top... they over protect the buyers because they have to, to stay profitable.. and they over tax the sellers because there is no easier way sell.

For one, if he challenges it he'll lose cause the item was clearly described so its his own fault. Up to you if you feel like dealing with it.

Thanks for your responses everyone! After further consideration I'm afraid he's stuck with it. I was clear in my listing and I did everything on the level. If he didn't read that does not mean I should have to eat the fees and deal with selling this thing again. Had there been any discrepancy in my listing I would consider taking it back, but I think it was as clear as it could be.

Seems like the right decision to me.

You could alternatively charge him a return or "restock" fee to cover the costs of the sale and shipping.

Ebay paypal side with the buyer alot, i sold a vs2000, guy got it and said knobs were broken off and the end cheeks had cracks, yet he had all the broken parts that had fallen off. I asked for full pics of the unit and shipping box because it was perfect when i sent it and i figured it had been damaged in shipping. He filed a paypal dispute and paypal only asked for my side of the story once, he never sent pics and When he mailed it back, in the original Box i sent it, the box was in perfect shape, so he dropped it after he got it. Paypal auto refunded him and screwed me

Why dont you post a link to the add so other people here could tell if they think it is deceptive? That is the only fishy thing about this thread; that you haven't posted a link to the auction, which suggests that other people might reasonably be confused by it.

I would refund him minus shipping and a small re-listing fee. These things do happen. Positive feedback is worth more.

IF it'll easily resell it'll probably be best to just take it back and relist. Don't refund until you get the item back though. Depends on what your terms are, but buyer should pay to ship back (and depending on terms you would determine whether to refund shipping cost too - I'm not sure if ebay requires full refund including shipping or not. My description says I accept returns but if item is as described I won't refund my shipping cost. Don't know if that flies or not- never had it come up)

From ebay seller boards it seems ebay often sides with buyers even when it's clearly buyer at fault (at least to hear the sellers describe the situation). Sometimes it's just a headache you have to put up with. Also - Buy it Now buyers seem alot better to me than your average bidder - I prefer BIN when I can for that reason.

edit: btw - ebay will refund final value fees and probably gives free relisting in a return scenario.

Good luck. Once the buyer disputes, it's most likely that PayPal will refund the buyer and not you. Happens way too often.
