Mac Intel Towers

I have heard that IF Mac were to announce Intel Towers this year, it would most likely be at their developers conference this August. To those Mac cats out there who are better clued in as to when Apple announces new releases, does this sound right?

thinksecret.com said that the mac pros will have a new case design and the macbook pros will eventually get a new case as well.

I really like the current tower case design, though I would love to see room for more than three card slots.

whatever the month may be-one thing always applies:
never buy the first generation of a new Macmodel.
At least wait for the first revision which will probably show up in january 07.
It will take at least that long for most of the thirdparty people to update their software to universal binaries anyway and being stuck with just Logic isnt really an option IMHO.

i never really agreed with the "don't buy Rev A" macs thing before.
But at least then there was SOME reasoning behind the claims, no one else was using PPC architecture. I always took the leap though and nearly every Mac i've owned was a Rev A (iMac G3 233mhz, G4 400mhz PowerMac, G4 400mhz PowerBook Titanium, G4 867mhz 12" PB, iMac G5 1.8ghz, and now a 2ghz MacBook Pro)

I didn't have any problems with any of them but i did have this 1.5ghz Powerbook 12" (let's see, that was a Rev D) that had to be replaced, and i tried out a G4 667mhz PB who's power supply started to smoke on my desk, which was sent back and i just stuck with the desktop for a year.

My point is, you get a dud or you don't get a dud. My luck with duds completely contradicts this archaic notion that all Rev A Apple computers are bug ridden.

Anyways, they're frigging PC's now people. The parts inside, unlike in the PPC days, are used by the other 95% of the computing industry. The risk factor was never high enough to begin with (its mostly folks who never bought Rev A's that say they're so damn bad), but it is especially low now with the change in architecture.

I only speak from my own personal experiences, so take my comments as they are.

yeah,
From what I remember the original issues of the G5s were pretty minimal. I remember a bad PS situation and that was about it. But I am sure I could google it and come up with other tech problems, but I could google the current macs and PC and come up with a bunch of tech problems. I bought a dual 1.25 when the first rev of the G5s came out and I kinda regretted it.

I was talking to a friend deep in Apple today about upcoming stuff. He would not give me detailed answers but I asked if we would see a new Tower at WWDC he said yes. I asked what chipset and he said look into the latest from Intel and I will find my answer. He would not come clean about new case design. I asked about more PCI slots and he laughed, he said that has not been on the road map in years.

He did say dont be surprised if we dont see a sneak peek of Logic 8 along with new Final Cut Pro. He told me his new office is in the same area as Logic development and said they have been working feverishly to finish something so his guess it Logic 8 for WWDC.

The one thing he told me which I found surprising is that there are about 35 people in Cupr. that work in the Logic team and they still have the emagic people in Germany. I figured that Apple cut the team to like 5 people.

OH MAN, HERE WE GO AGAIN. "The Logic Team working feverishly to finish something." Basically that means that by again putting marketing far above the importance of quality or stability, Logic 8 will be nother 2 yeas of bug-fixes. Just a hunch, and the team was squeezed into releasing L7 WAY too soon. People were compelled to upgrade because of the new ownership, and went though hell.

I'm sure glad I switched to Ableton...

My G5 is happy now, but I went though 3 Logic boards and a video card in 9 months. It's a dual 1.8. I lost a lot of faith in their quality control; although the macintels seem to be splendid machines, and as stable as the old G4's on the new OS.

Speaking of OS.....

Time for Tiger soon.

Besides, you can wait and wait and wait for a specific machine to be released. My philosophy has always been to ignore future promises and get the best I can today.

Usually that means getting 75% of the future performance at 75% of the price, and it's tried and tested technology - and you get to work with it right now, not in 6 months.

I waited for a G5 until last November and I was able to get a reaally great buy on one then. Waiting for an intel upgrade is a smart as it's going to take months to catch up to the intel Macs. Several plug-in comanies are very small and it's going to be a while for them, just as it took them to convert to OS X from OS 9, and Mix to HD.
Plus you know the 1st generation machines will go up price a bit Apple always does this then drops later.
