maag eq4 has a nice air band which ranges from 2.5k all the way up to 40k. I personally love it.

It changes the overtones below 20 KHz? Is there some folding back down to the audible frequency range?

Human ears can NOT distinguish different timbres above HALF of the hearing range. That means that above 8-9 kHz or so, everything sounds as a sine.

That's at the threshold of upper human hearing, I dare say the average person that has been exposed to loud concerts and played in bands would have trouble hearing 13-16k frequencies, above that we percieve the sound as a sheen(polish) or fairydust, that can sheen frequency can extend to about 22-24k, this is great for mastering purposes but the eq needs to be very tranparent in the way it boosts these frequencies.

As far as I know the brainworx "hybrid" goes up to 26kHz and the "digital" up to 22kHz. And yes the maag - never heard it though.
Cheers

Is that when you have an EQ that goes so High the filters create a nice open EFFX when you boost that hi freqs, and can give u a nice feel or Air.
That was a tip I got from AMIEL.

I always end up turning the Maag's air band down after listening to mixes on dumpy speakers/cars. I like it, but its easy to over do..

It's more about the shelf.
GML EQ goes up to 26k - but the shelf extends way lower.
You don't state DAW so I don't know if this is any use for you - it's pro tools only.

I wouldn't necessarily say identical to the hardware...but it's good.
I've also heard good things about the Fabfilter, I know people who swear by them.

Also, not being an EQ but Sonnox Inflator adds 2'dn and 3'rd harmonics.
