Need a simple, rock-solid interface.

I'm using a Mac Pro with Mountain Lion and crashing my audio drivers a lot in both Logic and Studio On, and Final Cut Pro X as well. My main interface is a Tascam 1641, which I like a lot, but the drivers are horrible, and I have to power cycle it frequently and/or restart the DAW.

I also have a Tascam US-800, but the drivers are even worse and it often simply disappears from the system. I also have some old Midman USB stuff but it's noisy as hell and I only use it in an emergency.

The 1641 is pretty much perfect for my purposes in other respects -- the multiple outs and back panel inputs are useful for laying out and back to a 2-track.

What's the answer?

RME drivers have always been rock solid. Might be a good solution for you

+2 RME. I'm on Windows platform but RME have consistently provided rock solid drivers for years. You get what you pay for IMHO.

For over a 10 years I've had the same RME Multiface on 4 different PC systems - never had a problem. Babyface on my Mac.

I would concider the steinberg ur824. Same quality as the excellent mr816, but with usb connection. Id take it over the rme firefaces any day.. i think the babyface is more appealing than their older brothers, when its comes to value for the money

I wouldn't recommend the MR816 for Mac. I'm on Mac and I used 3 different TI firewire cards and I got multiple dropouts, clicks, pops etc. the unit sounded great but the poor drivers made me sell it. I recommend RME, that's the route I'll be going!

Thats too bad.. my mr816 have worked very well with my mac for three years now. But to be honest I wouldnt recommend buying mr816 or any FW card at this point, as it seems that FW is a dying protocol... thats why I suggested the UR824

I've used a Motu828mkII for over 5 years on an XP laptop (with built-in TI chips) and now on my new iMac with ZERO problems.

You can chain up to 4 motu devices for massive track counts and they run stand-alone without a computer.
