Best individual DAW features.

What are some little tricks that the DAW you use has that others dont.

One that i know of is Tab to transients from protools.

Im sure the other platforms have some goodies that we are not all aware of.

What are they guys.

Logic Pro:

Too many features to mention :-)

A zoom scheme that works regardless of amount of tracks or objects. Flexible control interface and easy working external control implementation. Automatic tempo calculation based on selected beat. Select following objects (all/per track). Tie objects by position. Move selected objects to track. Solo mode and solo lock mode as well as solo track. Customizable icons and free mixer configuration. Screensets. Fully customizable key commands.

All of which ProTools doesn't have.

Oh, did I forget to mention a large selection of excellent plug-ins and instruments that comes with the package (unlike most other DAWs).

capability of instantly fixing late punch ins by dragging the mouse

routing that is easy to configure and easy to figure out.

plug-ins that are disabled rather than completely removed when you temporarily move to a different system where the plug-in isn't present.

A DAW that's truly a joy to use.

...well, I'm sure somebody's working on that feature.

Who cares. This thread will bring nothing new to the already tired DAW wars as evidenced by the zealous Logic posters who can't seem to talk about their platform of choice without taking pot shots at everyone else. It's all crap anyway, no one here is making a record as good as Pet Sounds, Sgt. Peppers, Zep 4, etc.

Give me a 4 track cassette machine and I'll still make a great record. They're just tools people . .. . . . .

Pro-tools!

1. It is called quick punch mode and trim!

2. If pro-tools is anything it is easy!!

3. Pro-Tools does this now.

Isn't the idea of this thread "which is the coolest feature of each individual DAW?", as opposed to "Why is _INSERT YOU CRAPPY PROGRAM HERE_" the best thing since Spray Cheese?"

I like Logic Pro, but I wish it had:

Nuendo's "ping" feature to calculate the latency of external units and automatically compensate.

Nuendo's surround mixing features

Nuendo's support for multi-channel VSTi's. Logic sucks at this.

PT's tab to transient, playlists, and group edits

I guess my fave features in Logic would be

- folders, and "show/hide" tracks

- the "loop" tool that lets you drag a track to your desired length,

- the "loop browser" which I never thought I'd use until I started using it..

- built in convolution verb, decent D6/B3/Rhodes emulation, and the surprisingly useful tape-delay plugin.

I sure hope Logic 8 steals some of the best features from the lists above, instead of simply adding more cruddy GarageBand style techno-toys so that weinies the world over can conntribute to the already appalling global surplus of BAD dance music.

It looks like a few people here forgot to mention which DAW they actually use.

For me it's Protools LE, because I always know where it's storing my audio files. Also incredibly intuitive, (at least to me...)

Protools:

1-Playlists are great for comping takes
2-BeatDetective is great for making a bad drummer sound like a good one.

I *definitely* recommend Cubase/Nuendo/Logic/Sonar/Samplitude/SAW Studio/Pro Tools/Audition/Digital Performer.

In terms of features and sound quality, it COMPLETELY kicks ass over Cubase/Nuendo/Logic/Sonar/Samplitude/SAW Studio/Pro Tools/Audition/Digital Performer.

THERE's NO BEST DAW. IT ALL DEPENDS ON THE USER. THIS IS A VERY SUBJECTIVE TOPIC. YOU'RE WASTING YOU'RE.

i don't think you understood the original intent of this thread. its not a daw vs. daw thread. its a "this daw does this and its pretty unique" thread.
and reading back, it looks like very few people actually read the original post. tsk tsk.

that said, Ableton Live's ability to warp audio sure makes fixing a drummer's poor timing very fast and easy. Or, ever have a drummer that didn't put enough swing into a take.... yep it can do that too - add more swing to AUDIO.

Yeesh. I knew that drum performances were already essentially manufactured in the studio, but before you still at least had a skilled engineer editing the parts. Now it sounds like you can just hit a few buttons and WHAMMO, perfect drums.
I'm not dissing any of you that say you use it. I'm just bummed that it's practically an industry standard practice by now.
As for me, I like Logic's included plug-ins simply because they're decent and "included", but I miss the absolute simplicity of working with edits, fades, and crossfades in Cubase.

lots of cool unique (afaik) features:
logic pro- distributed processing.

nuendo- outboard insertion/routing, also network-able (networked projects, different from distributed processing).

samp- ability to set proper pan law settings per channel. ability to encode plII-type matrixed stereo files. built-in burn is nice too.

dp- extremely flexible bussing, consolidated window, "song" mode with vracks for common instruments/plugs across multiple sequences.

metro- VERY small program footprint (3mb installer?). low on system resources, VERY quick fixes for confirmed bugs. support for vst/au plugs simultaneously. color schemes for the windows/transport.

features that are cool, but not unique:
folder tracks: nuendo, dp(5.x), logic(?), samp(?).
surround support: to varying degrees, all of them but metro.
cpu "enhancement" behavior for plugin efficiency: logic, dp(5.x).

also, each contender has plenty of things that suck too, but that's for another thread altogether

With all due respect to Synth80s -- I have to say he's 180 degrees wrong about this.

I am utterly convinced that Cubase/Nuendo/Logic/Sonar/Samplitude/SAW Studio/Pro Tools/Audition/Digital Performer is, instead, the superior DAW and that Cubase/Nuendo/Logic/Sonar/Samplitude/SAW Studio/Pro Tools/Audition/Digital Performer is a clumsy follow-along picking up the leftovers.

Cubase/Nuendo/Logic/Sonar/Samplitude/SAW Studio/Pro Tools/Audition/Digital Performer has superior workflow.

It's highly intuitive, as well.

It just seems to know what I want to do, when I want to do it.

Hell, half the time it's already done it and is lying in bed next to me smoking a cigarette.

Now that's a goto tool.

And it just sounds better.

[PS... I think I left out part of the name... I think there's a PowerTracks Pro in there, somewhere, too. And Magic. And Saw. And... where's that Alzheimer medication?]

Cubase/Nuendo > RIGHT MOUSE BUTTON TOOL MENU!!

Not many, if any, other DAWs have this and I reckon its THE quickest way to change tools, especially if you check a box in preferences and then just the little icon tool menu pops up

also, the notes are NAMED in the piano roll editor - anything else do that?

Logic Pro for one..

Anyway, that's not the quickest way to change tool as it requires two presses, and with the mouse too. So not only is it bad for your wrist (as opposed to the keyboard) but you can't work while changing tool.

In Logic you can place all tools on the keyboard for direct access, or place any favourite tool directly on the second mouse button, and/or via modifier key for momentary changing.

Ok. Last time I looked Macs didnt use the right-hand mouse button, so how is that possible in Logic Pro?

And actually (tools are mapped to keys in Cubase also), this is the quickest way to change tools, because you dont have to actually move at all to do it.

And the ability to work while you change tool is a irrelevant because by defintion you are changing tool and cant get any work done.

and... well.. Logic sucks, doesnt it?
