Mac Pro 2.8GHz quad-core vs 2.4GHz eight-core?

Hi Guys,

I am about to replace my trusty old Mac Pro with a newer one in my Cubase-based project studio - and I'm just keen to confirm I'm making the right choice between the two.

The options are:

* Mac Pro (Nehalem) 2.8GHz quad core

* Mac Pro (Westmere) 2.4GHz 8-core

The quad is a couple of hundred dollars cheaper, but I am planning to keep this machine for 4 or 5 years so I want to make the wisest long-term choice.

I assume the 8-core is absolutely the way to go, but is there any reason why the 2.8 quad would be better, purely from a DAW point of view?

Cheers,
Mike

I would take the Quad-Core, since it's clocked higher than the 8-core.

You can always upgrade the CPU to a Hex-Core if you need more power in the future.

some plugins could make cpu overload with 2,4ghz. i replaced my old mac pro 3ghz quad with 2,4ghz eight core. overall performance is much better but in logic i sometimes max out single core which rarely happened with 3ghz quad.

I'm starting to think this is the way to go.

Or even just go for the 3.2GHz quad current model - they are much cheaper than they used to be.

A 3.2GHz quad is the same price as the run-out 2.4GHz 8-core....

Thanks for your feedback!

So if you were buying again, would you go with the 3.2GHz quad instead of the 2.4 8 core?

How have you found the 2.8 limiting? With high virtual instrument counts? Or effects?

Cheers and thanks,
Mike

What do you mean by this and also single??? Do you mean a 2.8 single core??

Are you saying buy a quadcore, and swap the CPU for a 3.3? Can you just use any PC CPU for this and put it in a Mac pro?

If they were both the same speeds. eg 2.8, would a quad still be better??

If Logic's realtime engine gets updated, so it can use more than one processor/core for 'realtime mode', things look different.

I think he means a single processor - so one quad as opposed to two quads in an 8 core machine.

Of course not. You need to use the same socket and get a processor that is compatible with the mobo.

I'd want to see the benchmarks. I generally favor a higher base clock for DAW work but you can't blindly assume that all GHz are created equally. And realize that different benchmarks access different performance aspects. Look at DAWbench when trying to spec a computer for audio.

Is this processor specific to Apple, or is this a PC processor that you can use to go into the Mac Mobo. Just like you can use PC rams in your apple.
