Windows update murdered MIDI

Last week Windows 7 (PC) installed some updates, next day MIDI no longer works... it's getting to my RME fireface from controller (has indicator light) but will not bridge to any software... mainly my Cubase Studio 4.... I've reinstalled that and RME drivers to no avail.... as well as some registry cleanup stuff, still not working... any ideas before I come have a PC tech do an OS re-install?
AMD 2.8 64 bit, 4 gigs ram UAD-1 & Powercore PCI

Good point- I'm a super "late adopter" when things work I leave them that way for a long time unless a new bell or whistle intrigues me.... if it ain't broke don't fix it! Maybe time to move on ( I think I used XP till about 4-5 years ago)
