Toshiba Satellite i7 for DAW, any experience?

In the market for a mid priced notebook, I tried out the HP and Toshiba notebooks at Best Buy.

The i7 2.2/(3.3 turbo) seems to be where mobile processors have maxed out, so going with a dedicated DAW build that uses the same Intel chipset, you are essentially paying more for extra I/O (FW). Unfortunately, a small minority of notebooks include FW and those that do are not using the TI chipset. Its my intent to use RME Fireface UFX via USB with whatever new notebook I get, so I don't see the benefit of paying significantly more for a DAW build with FW that uses the same mobo chipset.

Anyway, ran DPC Latency check with Toshiba Satellite i5 (they didnt have i7) at Best Buy and it got high marks without having to disable anything. (It was cruising around 60us with highest occasional spikes around 450us.) They also let me unscrew the backplate and I verified that there is an empty drive bay with connector. The HP laptops, have an extra drive bay, but sadly no esata connector. (They also had less impressive DPCL perf but that could be a number of factors.)

Anyone using a new Toshiba for DAW? I know conventional wisdom is to go with a DAW builder, but that is just paying a premium for them to integration test. I don't need FW and am more comfortable buying from a place with liberal return policy.

As long as you use UFX via USB, I think you are good to go. And it's nice, you already tested DPC latency before committing to buy. The question is more erlated to accessories and expandability. I've owned Sony, IBM, Toshiba, and Mac laptops in the past, and IBM/Toshiba has been my favorite for the build quality and ruggedness. It's a little different, as the build quality is not as good as 15 years ago. But, I got Thinkpad W520 with main SSD and secondary HD, and external HD (USB3.0) or eSATA dock. The interface is UFX. It's a beast.

Thanks, I'll check out the THinkpads. Really good to hear you are getting good performance with UFX over usb. My UFX arrives tomorrow.

I need a new notebook for my work, but I realized that whatever I buy will be perhaps more powerful than my current DAW, so I might as well dual boot and keep a DAW partition.

Ordered from Amazon. 3.99 Overnight shipping with Amazon Prime, should be here tomorrow, and they have a liberal 30-day return policy.

Its crazy what you get for $800 these days. Intel Core_i7_3610QM outperforms the custom built PhenomIIx4 I built 2 years ago, by about 100%. Assuming its usb works well with the UFX.
