Need advice on new mac

is the 2011 imac powerful enough for mixing/producing full songs. I'm currently using the 2009 imac with 113 tracks (about 15 virtual instruments). I started to mix the song but can't finish. It's slowing down and wont budge.

I've been trying to wait for the 2012 imac but I don't know if I can wait any longer. According to geekbench the 2011 imac is 3 times faster than mine so i'm assuming it should be enough? Any advice appreciated thanks

Are you unable to print those VI's? Why? I think that the 2011 iMac should suffice, but you might want to wait for the 2012 (it has got to be coming soon!). What is getting bogged down, the CPU, RAM, or HDD? I am assuming the CPU. Try to mix down some tracks, like printing two kick drums into one and the snare top and bottoms into one. What are the biggest CPU eaters?

I think it's the CPU slowing it down. I get the 32 bit audio bridge crashed error message a lot. Then I have to hit cancel save an reopen which takes like 5mins. This doesn't happen on less CPU intensive projects. It's very frustrating. When I freeze the tracks it helps but then as I start adding plugs it slows again. I put in 8gb ram and now have my projects o.n an external drive to help but it's not enough

Can't you just wait until October? You've waited so long already.

Logic or Ableton Live? Freeze the tracks. As a bonus you could open those ten years from now when the plug-in vendors have stopped supporting 'em.

Max out the ram, use multiple hard drives (I use 2 Glyphs on my 2012 iMac) and freeze your tracks.
(Note- EVERY daw computer should have separate drives for sample libraries and project files)
Should be anything you can't handle then.

I had an 09 iMac. Went through the same issues. Got a quad core Mac Pro from 09, and I've never looked back. Not saying a newer model wouldn't be better, but I've had no probs. 4 x 250 seagate drives, 2 Glyphs, 8 gig of ram. Not bad.

And it was only $800. I got $600 for my iMac.

have you tried running in 32 bit mode? i know you're wanting to use your 8gb ram but if the 32 bit bridge is causing the problems it probably isn't due to your specs as far as i know, the 32 bit bridge is just very unstable

Sounds like to me you need to plan your arrangements better, not buy a new computer. A computer 20 years from now will have the same problem but you will have 400 tracks and 75 virtual instruments complaining about the same problem.

I have a 2008 mac book pro sitting in my cloest. Is there any way to offset some of the VI/PLUGINS to it? I've done some research and heard logic nodes are useless. And the only way I've seen to have a slave computer to play a VI was through that vienna ensemble thing. Can I do this with other synths or plugins? I just need that extra like 10% processing power I feel.

Do not buy a 2011 iMac! Lot of sources saying a new iMac (2012) is just around the corner!

I agree with Dysanfel; better planning would definitely help you avoid these situations in future projects. In addition to already-mentioned tracks freezing and buffer increasing, I would suggest bouncing all the existing tracks to audio and mix without the software instruments.
Good luck!

FoxNews.com's Clayton Morris reports that an update to Apple's aging iMac lineup is "imminent"

Thinks October.

At Fox News "imminent" equals 3-7 weeks. I guess that explains "Mission Accomplished."

All Morris did was repeat reports from a week ago in his article.

Not saying that his report is wrong, just that he had zero new information to report.

In fact, I hope he's right. I'm aiming to pick up a new loaded iMac when it's announced!

Why not save a copy of the MIDI files for all of your VI's to a separate session, and print the ones loaded in the current session?

Assuming you don't need to make any further edits, this should save a ton of computing horsepower. If you need to make edits later, just open the separate session with the MIDI/VI active, make the tweaks, print the track and replace the one in your current session.

Doing this is an absolute must on my aging MacBook Pro, and would likely help your CPU as well.

I'm starting to HATE LOGIC PRO. the 32bit bridge is so unstable i can't use 64bit mode but 64bit is the only way my comp can play the songs. if i switch to 32bit it lags out very often. if I upgrade my comp it still cant use more than 8gb so it really wouldnt help. if i run my new comp in 64bit the bridge will crash. is their any way to end this vicious cycle. has any professional ever really finished a song using logic pro!?!?!?!

/anger :(

Yes. Use 64 bit plug-ins and VI's.

You have to start phasing out the 32 bit plugs.
