Focusrite vs MOTU - semi urgent help!

I just posted this in the TapeOp forum too, so I apologize to anyone who's had to see this twice. I'm just trying to quickly find someone with a good answer for me!

I have a couple of (I think...) good deals laid out for me that I need to make a decision on in fairly short order.

MOTU 896 mk1 - $250
Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 - $300

Feature-wise, I'm fine with either of them. I'm curious about:

-Sound quality. I will not be using the onboard preamps, just as converters.
-Stability. I know Focusrite drivers used to be dodgy but have gotten better.
-Compatibility. I'm using a Core 2 Duo iMac and dual boot via Bootcamp into Windows XP Pro SP3. Whenever I bring this up on forums I feel like I have to stick up for myself - Deal with it! I'm using Windows for some sessions, and I'm going to need to use my interface through Bootcamp as well as OS X.

If anyone has used one of these and can vouch for anything (ESPECIALLY the Bootcamp compatibility) please let me know. If anyone has gotten to use BOTH units and care to compare, I'm all ears! Thanks!

Saffire Pro 40 will kill the MOTU in sound quality, no question and easy choice to me. MOTU driver and Windows dont play well either with the MOTU box. I had a MOTU 828MKii here and sold it. I would take that Saffire Pro 40 over the MOTU I had as well and it was better sound wise than the MOTU MK1. Same pieces and parts in the 896 as the 828

That's a pretty solid statement! Kinda the opposite of what I was expecting to hear too. Thanks! Anyone else want to weigh in?

Actually no this is not true. Motu actually did use different converters in different Units. The 828 MII shared components with the 2408 MKIII not with the 896. I am not aware of it sharing components with other Motu units. In fact it had different components than the 828 MKI. Perhaps that is what you are talking about when say Motu MKI? If so you are indeed completely wrong. Now given this the 828 MKI is really not worth picking up.

Though the 828 MKII is actually a really good unit from the standpoint of AD/DA. It does not have the greatest clock and its analog stage could be cleaned up. There is a reason Black Lion mods it.

Focusrite is a nice interface. MOTU is not always too great with windows.

Actually, what Im getting at is anything MOTU in the MK1 version sounds like crap so same pieces and parts MEANS= same crappy AD/DA, pres etc, end of story. Im speaking figuratively not literally if your wanting to be technical. Actually, I SHOULD have said, SAME JUNKY PARTS. Doesnt matter if its an 828MK1 or a 896MK1, they still sound bad. 828MKII is NOT a good unit , I sold mine. It was cloudy/smeared representation of the audio and had an accentuated midrange honk which is why fools are throwing money at it with the BLA Mod. The MK3 series is a huge step up from MK1 or MK2 and I would gladly use that unit.

Nope.

I ran my Motu828mkII for 4+ years on an XP laptop (with built-in TexasInstruments chip) with ZERO problems. It's currently running on my new iMac just fine, too.

The key with Motu and other firewire interfaces is that Texas Instruments firewire chips are REQUIRED by Motu and other firewire ai manufacturers.

Motu is much more solid and stable on Mac than windows... So if its only between those two interfaces, I'd go w the focusrite.
