Retina MBP SSD upgrade released

It is still expensive, but considering the controversy over the fact that these notebooks could not be upgraded it is nice to see. Prices will drop.

The OWC 480 is $579. The upgrade from 256 to 512 on your macbook pro retina is $500.

The chance of voiding your applecare warranty is high. Why not just get the 512G SSD in your macbook pro from the start which will be cheaper. Not to mention the hassles of installing it.

The thing that makes this offer good is that it offers a USB 3.0 encasing for the already included flash drive. That way you can use the "useless" ssd for even more storage. This is like buying @ new ssd for your Mac and buying a 256 USB 3.0 ssd drive. Which isnt to bad at these prices.

That does sweeten the deal, but the offer ends next month. After that, I can't imagine why anyone would spring for the OWC drive unless they're replacing a failed drive out-of-warranty, which wouldn't happen yet since the model is too new.

What I think you might be forgetting here is the people that originally sprung for the "smaller" of the two base performance options. From the start, there were no options to expand the storage space...

If you are buying a retina MBP today however it makes a lot less sense.
