routing midi for more than one instrument track

I'm not a noob, but even as I write this I feel the answer is right in front of me...lurking...

I have two instrument tracks. One running Reason, the other Superior Drummer.

I have a MIDI keyboard and also a YamahaDTX 12-pad drum pad all running into a MIDIsport 2x2. Yamaha is on bank 'A' while the keyboard is on bank 'B' of the Midisport.

I set the MIDI out on each of the instrument tracks to their corresponding plugins. I then assigned the MIDI input to the respective banks on the MIDIsport. Superior drummer gets the Yamaha on bank A and Reason bank B and the keyboard.

MY PROBLEM:

Both instruments play at the same time despite my assigning the inputs/outputs to what I thought was correct and individual.

If I mute one or the other I can record just fine. But I want Reason to playback NOT muted so I can lay drums against it. As of now, if it was unmuted I'd hear my drum pad triggering the drums AND whatever Reason is running.

HOW DO I ROUTE THIS CORRECTLY?

I assume I need to do some digging inside Superior Drummer and Reason MIDI settings, but despite my best efforts, I still had to mute to record.

hopefully not too obvious, but make sure you have each instrument assigned to its own midi input channel, not omni.

Meaning go to Reason first, assign it's MIDI channel?

Then go to Superior Drummer and assign it's MIDI channel?

In Reason they have an Advanced MIDI tab. In Superior Drummer, I wasn't as lucky.

But Reason is the only one that doesn't obey my routing. Any other VI that I use I can assign correctly.

Saying that out loud, makes me think it's a Reason setting...ug...

Not sure what DAW.you are using, but yea, sounds like Reason and SD are set to MIDI Omni. That means they are going to receive on all ports and all channels. Do they both play during play back of the midi data you have recorded or just when you are recording? Also, when you play the keyboard does the DAW receive midi data on both tracks? If so you may not have the midi config in your daw set correctly. But check the settings in reason and sd first.

Using ProTools 10.

They playback indepednetly and correctly. Not together.

In ProTools I see MIDI movement on the Reason MIDI meter but NOT on Superior Drummer. However, the keyboard does trigger both Reason & Superior Drummer.

I had to go into the Audio Setup utility on my Mac and recreate my Alesis and Yamaha as new MIDI devices. Once I routed them and assigned which channels they were to obey, the correct corresponding info appeared in ProTools.

Boom. Success. THANKS SO MUCH!

This was my first time posting on GS and the response is 20X better than the AVID forums.
