Add nice preamp to my Firepod setup or buy Ensemble?

So I can't decide if I should just add a nice preamp to my current Firepod-based setup or upgrade all out to an Apogee Ensemble. I don't really need more than one preamp at a time so the Ensemble feels a bit like overkill and is more money than I'd really like to spend at this time.

I guess the main questions are this:

Is the general improvement to my AD/DA conversion worth the $1000 difference?

and

Is the AD/DA conversion on the Firepod a limiting factor such that getting a great preamp is a bit silly?

Thanks.

I wasn't quite clear (in regards to the Babyface suggestion.)

I still want 8+ channels total. I just don't need the preamp for my modular synth or ASR-10.

Most converters in pro equipment are decent enough. There will be a slight loss but a lot smaller than bad to good preamp.

Ok, sorry. (the only need one preamp thing threw me off).
Hmmm. I think it would be best to stick to the firepod. When you need to upgrade your interface next, you'll be able to keep the preamp.
