Tascam DA-30 to Imac

Hi everybody. I'm new and stupid. I've got a Tascam DA-30 Mk2 DAT machine that is typically unreliable and that I don't use any more. I'd like to transfer a whole bunch of mixes from my DAT cassettes to my Imac. I've got a Motu 8pre hooked up to my Mac and my DAW is Reaper. What's the procedure for getting this gear connected? I'd like to keep it all digital ( or at least I think I would ), no digital to analog and back conversions.

Getting out of the DAT in analog is a no brainer but is a straight digital transfer possible or is it even worth the bother?

Cheers to you all...

Did this myself a few years ago.
Used spdif out if da 30 into interface.
Just recorded it as one long file and chopped later.
You could do it analog , if you have great converters.
I had 2 tapes break and lost a lot of old material :-(

Thanks but let me be more specific: the Motu is equipped with Firewire and, I believe, Lightpipe connections. The DAT is equipped with s/pdif and AES/EBU connections. How do I connect these different I/Os?

Basically shit out of luck...without expense !
Easiest way is record to the analog ins of your interface.
(unless you can borrow a high quality a/d that has lightpipe output)

Cheers

Buy something like this: M-Audio CO2 | Sweetwater.com

There are less expensive versions of this type of thing if you search around. This is just the first one that came to mind.

Ah, that's what I was looking for. I've been out of the loop for a few years so i didn't know what existed. This is going to be a one-time-only operation though, just to get the stuff accessible in a format that people actually use. I may just go cheap and use the analog outs. Then I'm dumping the DAT. Anybody want to buy a totally obsolete and unreliable DA-30, ha ha? Thanks again for the info.

Before you dump the da30, remove your MOTU and place it aside, then use the da30 + co adaptor AS your front end into your Mac to check out the results. It then becomes an interface whether tape is in or not.

With all this "gee my old 16bit interface gizmos sound soooooo good" talk around here, you may already own the next coveted 2in, 2out vintage interface right there with your da30.

i've been meaning to connect mine and try it (I have some old fostex cop units that also do optical/coax)... but have been too lazy.

Try it and then report back here how incredible and awsome and mindblowing it sounds. That will help to jack up the resale value for all of our Da30s out here.
