2.3GHz i7 or 2.6GHz i7 with SSD on macbook pro for audio recording/mixing

Hi everybody,

does anyone have any experience with the MBP with solid stade drive?

I'm planning to buy a MBP for audio recording; I want something stable and fast which allows me to record at least 16 tracks simultaneously with ease.
So, I saw two models of MBP's, both are 15":
One is a 2.3GHz i7, which I'd upgrade with 8GHz of RAM and a 128GHz SSD,
the other one is a 2.6GHz i7, which I'd only upgrade with a 128GHz SSD.

At this point the two MBP would be the same except for the processor.
What I was wondering is: Do those 0.3GHz CPU make a big difference?
I see and read that those SSD's are lightning fast, which I like but will I benefit of that speed while I'm recording projects on a ext. drive (USB3.0) and mixing them from that same ext. drive?

I'm using Pro Tools 9 and I've heard that is highly recommended to record audio on an ext. drive. Does it really matter? Can I record on a ext. drive and then put the audio files on the int. SSD to mix the projects?

Thanx in advance

go with the latter one with the faster cpu as you can always later update your RAM easily (not so the cpu).

I was thinking about upgrading the SSD to a 256GHz actually. Didn't know you can upgrade the RAM on the MBP's.
What about using internal or external drive for recording or mixing (to prevent conflicts with Pro Tools I've heard)

You can't upgrade the retina MBP's drive . . .

Pssst, on the SSDs, it's GBs (gigabytes), not GHz (gigahertz)

I'm talking about the normal MBP not the retina.

I tested my 2.6ghz retina MBP by recording 32 tracks at 96khz for 1 hour. No problems or glitches even at 64 sample buffer.

Either machine would be plenty fast enough.

Hi, really nice to hear that.
The sample buffer has always been a problem.
For what I know, the only difference between the MBP retina and the normal one is that the retina has a flash memory which I assume works as good as the SSD upgrade.

Thanx
