A good external soundcard necessary with a good mic and a good preamp ?

Hello everyone,

I'm going to buy (this week probably) a blueberry and a mic preamp UA 610, but I was asking myself a question. I have a m-audio fast track (very basic external soundcard), and I wanted to know if it was necessary to have a good external soundcard when you have a good mic and a good preamp or if the card external sound becomes a simple converter and whether it could degrade the sound?

Cheers!

If the card is converting analogue to digital then yes it will impact sound. If the preamp has a digital out of some kind then no as the sound card is just acting digital (0s & 1's) pass through to the computer as the preamp is doing the converting

I don't think the UA610 has a digital output so the M Audio Fast track will be making the conversion from analogue to digital. If the 610 had a digital output it would already have a converter built in.
So the answer to your question is yes, you probably do need a better soundcard to do your mic and preamp justice. The fast track might not sounds that bad but it is probably the weak link in your chain. Something like an apogee duet might work?

But do I need external soundcard with the UA solo 610 ? I mean, does my chain could be just a mic and e preamp directly thru my laptop ?

That is something you should avoid at all cost. Get a good audio interface. You can find good ones not too expensive.

If you already have Fast Track, try Mic-UA610->Fast Track->your computer first anyway. There are many interfaces better than Fast Track (be prepared to spend $500 and more), but if you are satisfied with Fast Track, then what's the point. Consider upgrade only when you find the sound not acceptable.

I'm very biased to RME interfaces. Best drivers around and great uncolored conversion. I would go babyface if you only need 2 analog ins but probably would make the UCX my first choice. It depends on your needs and purse mate

All I need is a interface audio able to keep the sound and the color of UA Solo 610 and for the budget, it's about 300$

Babyface is more expensive then that. Maybe a Focusrite Saffire will do it for you.

+1

Don't buy anything until you are certain that you need it. And don't ever use the computer's soundcard.
