Clipping

Hi guys

I've been working on a mixing project for a band for a couple of weeks now. I did not do the recordings myself - they were done at a professional studio. My problem is that the engineer has been running the levels too hot, so clipping occurs several times - especially on one of the backup vocals. Note that I wrote professional studio...

The band has no more money to spend on studio time, so besides rerecording the parts with clipping or muting the affected tracks, what is there to do? Any tips or tricks?

I get this often too. How does the actual audio sound!, can you hear distortion ??

With very short clipping you can often get away with !!

Hi Clive

Thanks for the response.

Hmm, it's definitely noticeable, but it doesn't sound too bad because the backup-singer is screaming all the time - some might say it actually sounds cool. If it didn't clip I might've added a touch of distortion/saturation myself - I guess what bugs me the most is that I'm not in control of the sound. I think I was hoping that there was a plug-in out there, that could transform the hard digital clipping into something softer. I dunno... :-)

Ever heard of anything like that?

If the clipping is short in duration, an it's not on a lead part, I've gotten away with notching it out by automating a quick fader drop at the start of the clipping, and a quick fader rise/reset at the end of the clipping.

If its just a quick over, this can be done without it being noticeable. The question is whether or not the end result sounds better than the clipping. On the type of vocal you're describing, I'd be inclined to leave it there, add some distortion/saturation, and possibly a limiter with the hope that it would make the clipping less noticeable by comparison. That might be a case of "killing the patient to cure the disease," but it could be worth a shot. Good luck!

If the distortion is in the track and clip gain doesn't help, try throwing some distortion (the good kind on it.

Another possibility: Just draw a new wave form with the pencil. Kinda round it off manually. That helped me a lot with a few single clips.
