Upgrading. Converter/interface advice needed

Hey all,

I'm currently running Pro Tools LE 7.3 through a BLA 002r on a G4 Powermac, and I'm looking to upgrade to Pro Tools 10 and either a new Mac mini server or a used Mac Pro tower. I've been doing all mixing in the box and I want to start integrating my 16-channel PM1000 to mix on, so I would like to have 16 channels of good AD/DA. I'm using an Apogee AD8000 for 8 channels of AD/DA, and the 002's converters for the rest. Here's what I'm thinking:

-Get a second AD8000 to give me 16 channels of AD/DA, and get something like a Motu 2408 to use as an interface (going to and from the AD8000's via adat)

OR

-Get a Motu 24 i/o to use for converters and interface, and ditch the AD8000.

I'm open to other options as well, but these are the two I've been most seriously considering. Any advice/help with this would be great.

Thanks,

C

It looks like the 2882 only has 8 analog inputs and outputs, which means I would need to keep the AD8000 for another 8 channels. Any alternatives?

Thanks,

C

What about a RME UCX and connecting your AD8000 through ADAT? You get uncolored 8 ins from the RME and 8 more from your current AD you already know.

If you need 16 line AD/DA, RME M-16 AD + M-16 DA, then feed to HDSPe Raydat. You need mac pro tower, though.

The UCX looks like an interesting option. Any idea how its converters compare to the Apogee's? Also wondering if I would be dealing with latency issues by using 2 different converters. In other words, let's say I duplicate a track in Pro Tools, send one from the RME to the console, and the other from the RME to the Apogee to the console. Would this result in the two signals getting to the console at different times?

The M-16's look like a nice option as well, but way out of my price range. I'm hoping to spend no more than $3500 for the computer, interface, and software.

RME converters are more neutral than Apogee's if you will. You will have 2 flavors for conversion which allows you to choose which one to use for whatever occasion. And for latency you shouldn't worry as the signal goes through lightpipe.
