Thread Starter | your dream DAW?
Let's imagine you could get exactly what you want/need: what would be your dream DAW?
What functions would it have? How would you describe the GUI? Would it be something built from scratch, or some tweak of an existing DAW?

I don't care much about the software - it's often barely a question of getting used to it and change your habits.
I'd focus more on the hardware part.
So, for me, the ideal system would be some DSP accelerator card(s) that would be compatible with almost every DAW.
Think about the ProTools-type cards that could be used with Cubase/Nuendo, Logic, Reaper, Ableton, whatever... and provide DSP acceleration for the software and plugins.

My dream DAW.... Logic X:
- GUI with a touchscreen in mind
- Dedicated iOS app
- Apogee presents a controller (like the SSL Nucleus) that has total control over a DAW like we have never seen before.
- Build-in store to buy plugins lessons etc with your iTunes account making it easy for developers to distribute and getting payed. Great for users to buy and install/update/reinstall. (no more iLok dongles or other security hassle for those that buy software)
- iCloud integration for storage and always have your projects available wherever you are and the options to share files.

I'd like to see a Modular - Master Server/Child Server/Client model. A stupid powerful server on the back end as a master, remote child servers at other locations, and clients connected to the master server to provide the GUI and Playback. Very similar to MythTV or MediaPortal.
I'm thinking a distributed daw, over the internet with low latency.

Plus, make the whole mixer a plug-in so that new console emulations can integrate better and take it to the next level.

(beside that I love their stuff, they feel like Apple products )

It would make superb music without dint of my own effort when I was otherwise engaged with exotic maidens on a sun kissed beach with talcum powder sand. Er ... did I just type that out loud?
Edit - you did say 'dream' DAW

My Kingdom for a 13inch quad core i7 ultrabook with microSSD and 2.5inch drive bays...
Seems to exist in 11 inch and 15inch but all the 13 inch stuff is dual core at the moment....
(If anyone knows of anything, I'm all ears!)

3d interface through goggles, every single thing loaded in RAM always, spectral editing at multitrack level, granular resynthesis available at all times, just to name a few.

- The Logic instruments as seperate apps...
Imagine Ultrabeat XL (MKII) as app, making beats on the road and export the midi files or as Apple loops (via iCloud) for use on your main Logic X DAW.

I'd say something like Cubase with sync capability to MTC (real-time tempo sync for midi)
important things to add
- free routing
- actual tempo detection (non-linear), for manipulating non-linear sync audio to a grid (time alignment)
That's about it, I don't need much more than that TBH, I can anything else in a external editor or plugin. And if I could do time alignment better in a plugin that would be just fine too.
Cubase already touts industry best plugin and VI support, so it makes sense to carry on the platform while integrating other features that are popular in other DAW's.

My dream daw would be designed to emulate OTB workflow.
Maybe like a 3-d emulation of a tape deck and a little mixer.
But instead of having a screen and being OS-driven and all that, perhaps it just uses 1/2" tape.
