Best laptop interface for recording- USB- Firewire?

Hello all- Haven't been around here in years (my ID had apparently expired), but could use some help on a Laptop purchase

Ok, I'm stuck- I need to buy a new laptop and I want it to replace my desktop PC for recording, however, I am stuck between recording solutions- I was spoiled by the flexibility of my old EZbus with 8+ channels on a lightpipe into my desktop, and I want similar or expanded performance in the future.

However, I need to buy the laptop this coming weekend and it will be a while before I can get a new recording interface and the options seem limited-
If I go with something like the Prosonus Studio Live I would need firewire- Is Firewire even available on a laptop anymore?

Or if I go with something like Motus-896mk3 I could probably get by with USB2- But what about USB3 ports- Are they compatible?

Frankly I want something that has the live ability or the Studio live and the recording flexibility of the motu, plus I would love scrub and transport, but no one seems to be making this in the post ezbus days. This is the real reason I am stalled.

And I hear apple has a new interface- Thor or something? Should I factor this in?

While I'm at it, in the $800-1500 range, want to recommend a good 17" laptop? What's the processor to be looking for? I want something that is so fast that I never have to worry about a few plugins per channel when mixing down 16 or so channels.

I'll use this rig for everything from home recordings, live recording, AV post etc and currently using Cubase ai4

Thanks for any and all input!

I'd buy a sandy-bridge i7 quad core HP Elitebook, there's some good deals around at the moment as they've just released the new ivy bridge versions so the sandy bridge aren't the flagship models anymore.

See my thread about my 14 inch Elitebook working with FireWire.

There are plenty of good usb2 interfaces out there now for non FireWire laptops.

RME, M Audio, MOTU and steinberg work fine.
