Massey Plugins vs Others!!!!

Well guys I just got back from LA and had a chance to A/B all of the Massey plugins to some of the well known plugins and here is what I was able to come up with......

Mind you first off, I wasn't able to have alot of time doing this but I sat there and did my best.

Setup....
I was on my setup which is a
Mix Plus ++++++
G4 Mac Dual 1.25
Track was Hip Hop
with the help of a friends ilok many plugins
Hui Board
My Event ASP8 Speakers
All Monster Cables
Speakers on Stands filled with sand

Alright, with that out the way, here was the test results

1. I started of with the Massey CT4 Compressor. I love the look of this one and couldn't wait to try it out next to the Waves Ren Comp, Drawmer, URS 1970 & 1980 and the Sony Dyn.
I do more Hip Hop R&B Production so LowEnd Bump is very very very important. Also did I say LowEnd was important? ok.
The kick was a fair kick. It had more energy in the 125hz than anything but, had some 50 to 60hz in it as well.
I don't know what the threshold of the Massey CT4 is so I tried different thresholds. It seemed more of a threshold of -30db when I got through.
So the test numbers were this
-30 threshold
5 to 10db ratio
I matched output on all of them
Fast attack and release
ok here ya go....
1. Massey- I love the snap on this thing. Had that SSL snap when @ 4 to 5db ratio. When it got to 10db, it started to get flat sounding but, still had a little snap. It didn't hold up at big ratio's like 10db. The sound started getting squished.
Some reason though on the snare it still held up really great. Also it put a little bottom end snap to it. That led me to believe that when it comes to the Mix Buss or Kicks with heavy lowend I'm not sure about this being your go to unless it's at 5db or less.
Here what my picks in order were,
1. Drawmer- Dam, this one blew me away and everything else. Didn't know about this one at all to tell you the trueth. It kept the lowend and then some. It had a nice slap as well. Great for Mix Buss I think as well as Single channel thump.
2. Oxford Dyn- This one was steady. It held the bottom end on both the Mix Buss and single track. Nothing there to make you go WoW though.
3. Waves Ren Comp- Same as Sony...held the bass right there even at high 10db ratio's.
4. URS 1980- Nice Bottom End but a little pumpin. Also I noticed the width wasn't as wide. Don't know what that's about but when it came to single tracks WOW!!!! It had this slap that's great. Also I noticed it brought it out front alot. Very nice on single channels.
5. URS 1970- Same as 1980 but even thinner, meaning the width. Again, don't know whats that about. Also a little more pumpin was going on.
6. Massey's CT4- It has this very nice slap at 4 to 5db thats nice. It was close to the URS on single channels with the kick and snare. The URS still had a little more slap though.
But, I loved the Massey CT4 at this ratio. As far as on the Mix Buss or @ 10db ratio. It didn't hold up IMO. The lowend just got lost and it just didn't cut through.
So in the long run I know what your going to ask me....would I have still bought it?
Hell to the yeah!!!! I think overall, I would never really go to 10db ratio. That was really extreme. Plus for the price, it sounds better than most of them out there. On single channels I have to rate it at number 2 @ 4 to 5 db or less ratio. Believe me it is still a great compressor wthout a doubt.

Now the Tape Head......Check out Test 2...Tape Head
