Format Imac Factory SSD procedure to do a fresh install. Help please?

Hi there i heard that using a write all zero's format is absolutely NOT the way to go for an ssd.

What is the best way to be able to install my system completely fresh on mac?

any help? anyone familiar.. searches not bringing up any helpful info...

thanks!!

Try a search for "secure erase" which is an ATA command that SSD controllers will recognize to mark all NAND blocks free. There is a utility called HDDErase which can do this but you need a PC with a BIOS.

Never tried it but you may have to update your SSD firmware and unfreeze the SSD it so it can secure erase. You may also need an external USB SSD enclosure.

Zeroing an SSD may actually result in speed degradation. This *writes* a zero to every cell. Numerous small files are what kills SSD speed. You want to *unwrite* every cell.

..definitely no access to a windows machine with a bios..

don't know what you mean by unfreeze the ssd.

i am certainly not going to open an imac and remove the factory ssd and install it in an external enclosure.. i have 3 years applecare i intend to keep.

yep i know not to zero..

basically all i want to know is the best procedure to format the ssd to freshly re install osx.. that's it...

if disk utlity and a standard erase is the best way to do this then i am happy to that.. just wanted to know if there is any chance, as i know it's not really erasing, that the left over data could intefere with a fresh install.

any mac users here with ssd that have done this?
