well this should not be in the high end forum but anyway
(almost) all FW devices have 2 FW ports so that you can 'chain' multiple firewire devices together on the same buss. if you have nothing else to connect dont worry about it.

The digi 002 manual suggests connecting your firewire drive through the 002. That is a use for the other port.

Even so, I get a lot better performance with the firewire drive connected to it's own port on the computer.

I may be wrong...but I believe that is the other way around......connect your HD to the computer and the 002 to the HD!?
Any way, I'm using it like you stated for lack of firewire ports ...no prblems so far...just remember to power up the digi before you wakeup the computer

Any confirmation on that? I was wondering the same thing. I am running comp>002R>Hard drive. Should I be running to the HD then the 002R?

I've heard it's better to put your drive either before the 002R in the chain (002R --> HD --> Computer) or the drive on it's own port. The reason being that if your 002R was before the HD and the 002R loses power or it's connection (which we know can happen with the infamous power harness issue) during a disk write, it could toast your drive or at least your session.

This has been discussed quite a bit over on the DUC.

in general it is better to have computer -> HDD -> 002 simply because if there is a cable problem to the 002 your session will be halted but you will not loose any data. if it were the other way and there was a cable problem then you are more likley to loose data. if you have a fixed installastion that isnt going anywhere and the cables are secured and arnt ever going to come out then it realy shouldnt matter as long as you dont have any extreamly long cables runs. remember the 2 FW ports on a device are wired pin for pin and simply extend the FW cable.
