Question Can We Talk About Bit Depth?

is there a program or plug-in out there that allows 12-bit rendering/12-bit depth conversation?
or are we stuck with 16+?

someone learned please help.
Thanks.

There are bit reduction plugins.

Master Destrukto by Audio Damage is one.

But it doesn't tell you what the bit rate is, it just has a slider but it definitely goes lower than 12 bits. You gotta use your ears.

I almost forgot. PSP Nitro does Samplerate and Bitrate reduction. You can set the bitrate to tenths of bits.

there's a bit reduction plug in logic...goes down to 1 bit if you want...but i think you must still output at 16...although itunes will convert to 8bit if you like...umm...

What are you trying to do? If you are making audio CDs, you have to be in 16 bit format. Do you just want the crunchy sound of old 12 bit samplers? If so, the bit depth reduction plugins that come with most DAWs, or the ones mentioned above, will get some of that distorted sound - but none of the analog path that contributed to the actual "sound" of those boxes.

Setting bit depth reduction to "10ths of a bit" sounds like a joke ...

What does DAW stand for? (no newb-o)

& yeah, thats exactly what I want...
I guess you're saying I'm going to have to come outta pocket to get that 12-bit sound...

DAW means "Digital Audio Workstation," or, what program you use for recording. Tell us which one you use, and then we can tell you if you need to spend any money or not. Most likely you won't.

Logic's BitCrusher can reduce to any bitdepth, max. 24 bits though.

Unlike other Logic plug-ins, it doesn't output 32 bit float (of course).

If you're in doubt about the bit depth of a given plug-in or output you can download and install the free BitViewer plug-in from Toby Bear.

The link is near the top under free plug-ins (apulsoft - Bitviewer).

I was thinking about this the other day...and in fact it is not as silly as it may sound.

If an 8 bit bit-depth divides the full amplitude from -100% to +100% in 256 segments (2^8) and 7 divides it in 128 segments (2^7)) it should very well be possible to divide a signal in say 5 segments. This would be 2^2.23. So it would be a file of 2.23 bit depth. Of course this makes no sense from a binary way of looking at things, but mathematically this does make some sense.
