Question Guitar input for iPad 3?

Hi, I just got an ipad and I would like to use it as a light portable guitar rig and audio tracking setup.

I saw that Line 6 has an accessory called Mobile In but apparently you can't use it within GarageBand to record what you're playing. Too bad. I also saw that iRig/Amplitube thing, but it doesn't have any distorded sounds to play thrash metal, only fender amps.

So I'm looking for a small interface to plug a guitar in, get a decent sound out of it (especially some mesa rectifier / engl mod) and be able to record it in GarageBand. Does it exist?

AmpliTube on iPad has far more than just clean Fender sounds. There are crunch, lead, and metal amps as well as distortion, drive, fuzz, etc pedals. Check it out http://www.ikmultimedia.com/amplitubeipad (there's a link to audio demos on the left side too).

iRig is a great input device too (the most popular out there) and we'll have an active unit with a stomp switch on it too, soon, iRig Stomp which you can see more about at http://www.ikmultimedia.com/irigstomp

Glad to see that Peter weighed in from IK. I had to do a password reset to post a reply, and his post showed up while I was sorting out my login.

I've used the AmpliTube plugin extensively in my recordings, and was going to suggest that you take a look. And the iRig Stomp looks interesting- I'll have to check it out when they drop! I was going to mention the Apogee Jam as a decent sounding interface for recording purposes, but the iRig Stomp looks a lot more appealing for guitar- both for live and recording... might be better to wait for it!

Thanks, yeah Amplitube & iRig seem appealing. I listened to the ipad audio demos and clean sounds sound cool but 15 Metal and 16 Punk Rock sound the same to me and they don't sound Metal at all!!

One question though, is it possible to record what's played with Amplitube in GarageBand?

As for Apogee Jam, it doesn't feature any amp sims right?

With an app like Dropbox you can save audio recorded and open it on your desktop DAW or in other apps on your iOs device. There are definitely some great hi gain sounds on AmpliTube for iPhone and iPad.
