How to route a standalone vst into cubase?

How would I link a stand alone vst into cubase. I have a vst that simply will not load into my vst instrument chain but does show up as a standalone synth outside of cubase? I know there is a way to do it (ie. routing audio back in with soundflower) but how do i get the midi to trigger the outboard vst.
