Apogee Duet 2 no waveform in guitar recording

Using Duet 2 with Logic. Recording electric guitar straight into the Duet and using Guitar rig. I have software monitoring selected. The thing I find strange is I have the Duet guitar input turned all the way down. I still hear the guitar through guitar rig just fine but there is no waveform in the recording. When I turn up the input gain on the duet it just introduces a lot of undesirable noise.
Am I using the Duet correctly to record electric guitar?

I've had the same issue with an apogee one (sort of - less of the distortion but no waveform, plays fine but a pain in the a** to edit. I sort of assumed it was a logic thing rather than an apogee thing?
