Firewire Aluminium HD enclosures , no fan, reliable ?

A lot of these Aluminium Harddisk enclosures don't have a fan .
Is it reliable to mount a good brand of Harddisk in it , say WD 120G and use this as a DAW drive ?
I notice that these boxes get pretty hot on the outside .

most computers dont have a fan for the hard disk and they cna get fairly hot

its fine aslong as you have enough space above and around them, you dont want to sack these drives on top of each other
