Guys, people are listing which plugins changed their world because that is the question asked in the title.
As far as I understand all of these are "sound" plugins. The words mixing plugin makes me think of something like a specialised meter plugin or some automated mixing thingie?
Why do the words sound plugin require that plugin to be a VI?
If the question was to be limited to VI's then it should be worded as Which VI's changed your world?
People rarely read the body of the OP when it comes to such general questions of taste.
The point of a forum is to communicate with everybody rather than directly with the OP so it is natural to write what you think makes sense rather than what fits the fine print of the OP.
Cheers,
BP

The title is meant to be a very brief and general summary, as is any title, but especially those on an internet forum. Succinct details were explained in brevity within the first post. If I could change the title I might consider it, though I'm not strictly looking for VIs, so that would turn certain people away and that's a bigger problem than having to sift through too many irrelevant posts. I didn't image that so few would have the attention span to read the first post. I always do and assumed others would.

I think the issue is with writing comprehension rather than reading comprehension.
The way I understood what you wrote is that you are interested in what people use and then as an extra you are looking for some VI's only that you din't mention VI's just "synths" and "noise makers".
When I read noise makers I immediately though of some kind of dub siren type of thing of which I know nothing about.
Plugins that are used to simulate amps for instance still require a signal and in that way are no different than a channel strip with compression and eq imho.
Effects don't generate anything either really on their own.
The only thing left is VI's and test tone generators. I have never heard of anything else.
I think you would get more of what you want if you mentioned what you wish to achieve rather than asking people what they use.
Cheers,
BP

Hey elambo,
I read your first post and thought it was perfectly clear.
So, I would ask, "have you ever tried CamelSpace?" It's true that it's not a VI, but man, if you slap it on *any* VI already in your arsenal, it will change that VI into a completely different, inspiring beast. I play electric guitars through it sometimes, and it can be really awesome for that. It can also make a "ho-hum" pad into a "wow! what is that amazing noisy-synth-pad-like-thingy you have there?"
It's a cool, deep, out-there effect. I can only use it on 1-2 elements in a mix since it's pretty attention-grabbing, but you can tweak a lot of elements within it to simplify what it does, and there are a lot of presets to try out, too.

I know there isn’t much love for Waves NLS but for me it’s changed everything, it’s that final 5% that was missing. I don’t know what most people expected and it seems most folks are looking for decapitator 2, this is meant to be very subtle, but used right it changes something that can’t be really be described. Im talking about the SSL btw…

True, it's now more of a social study than a music query.

I think when the Waves SSL first came out. I remember there was a thread here on Gearslutz that started the ITB vs OTB battle and that thread was so big and it got crazy. It was hilarious at times. So Wavs SSL was a game changer

Superior Drummer 2.0 completely changed my approach to music production/songwriting. I tend to write all of the parts for an album/song myself, and then give the session guys a fully recorded/produced demo. When the final takes go down, it's my idea with that player's feel imparted. I get songs out the door much faster this way as opposed to giving them notes, or trying to piece together drum loops that are in the ballpark.

Way back in the day, it was Battery. I started off literally pasting drum hits into audio tracks to make drums, and loading kits in an instant plus the editing features was a revelation.
Today, I would say it must be the Fabfilter Volcano2. It's part of so many instrument sounds I make! I have certain Volcano presets that are named after user presets in my synths... like an extension of the actual instruments. Love their plugins, like Pro-Q and the Twin, for their awesome sound quality and intuitive, flexible interfaces.
