Subtractive eq with Cubase equalizer

We all know Cubase eq is not the best to use, but if you use it in a subtractive non additive way, does it affect the sound quality?

I just bought a CC121 controller and I would like to take advantage of the EQ knobs.

We? I don't think this at all.

All Eq adjustments positive or negative affect sound quality.

I use the Nuendo 5.5 eq alot actually. It resides at a nice place in the signal path after the inserts 1-6 before inserts 7/8 and when I just want a clean eq I use it often. Partly for the same reason, I have a CC121 and can dial it in quickly.

I still like the Sonnox EQ the most but I have no fear of using the Cubeundo one as needed.

there's nothing wrong with the cubendo EQ, it's just not 'character' EQ.

If it's good enough for ES, it's good enough for... anyone who knows what he or she is doing :-)

Cubase in line plugins ARE GOOD.
especially when you re doing substractive eq. A bit dirty when you boost the high end.

Yes there is...it distorts when boosting low frequencies. I've documented this @ the cubase forum but heard nothing.

Writing a post at a Forum is not 'documenting' it's posting your perceived results. The results are questionable - as many other people are using Nuendo and Cubase and don't report this behavior...including me. I used Nuendo for 8 years and didn't have distortion from boosting low frequencies with the assorted EQ's supplied with the Software.

Like many other folks here, I don't think there's something wrong with Cubase's EQ.

I just don't like how it boosts and the filters (LPF/HPF) are not "that" good.

For small dips, its totally usable.

Well gee..thanks for clearing that up. How about you do the "test" and report back? The problem's there. Whether you discovered it for 8 years or not.

Post with reproducealbe test is here: www.steinberg.net • View topic - channel eq causing distortion

Unless there's some sort of modelling involved in the stock cubase channel eq(which I highly doubt there is) Cubases channel EQ sounds EXCACTLY the same as any other digital EQ of minimum phase design, whether it's the one from Pro Tools, Logic or any other one with a shiny vintage GUI. Please check the EQ Myth thread. Whether you like working with the channel EQ or not is another thing.
