Had a good run with Akai EIE Pro?

So i think my Lexicon Omega has kicked the bucket after 6 years. shame. it was good.

The Akai EIE Pro is in my price range and the sterling review it got on here is encouraging but i'm curious to know if anyone's had a good run with it and how they're getting on with it?

much obliged

oh i should add - if anyone thinks there are better options to consider then please suggest. pricing upto £300 say, with consideration for maybe a bit more

I'm also really interested in getting this interface.

I heard one guy on youtube saying he returned it because when he used the USB hub ports on the back, he started getting audio latency.

Can anyone confirm or deny this?? It's really one of the main reasons I want the interface.

I should be receiving mine VERY soon.... I will post a review ASAP. BTW, it is my understanding that there were QC problems with the early units... I have been waiting 2+ months for delivery, but I'd rather have a "good" one.

I just wanted to chime in and say that I have been using the EIE pro for about a month and have had great results. The price cannot be beat.

You never even replied to a single follow-up post in that thread. It is very plain that you were expecting inserts on the output channels instead of on the input channels. That's either a lack of understanding or a failure to look at the specs.

I hooked my EIE Pro up today for the first time. How is the mono switch supposed to work. I thought I could switch between mono and stereo listening, but it's always stereo. Same with headphones.

Apart from this confusing issue, I highly recommend it! Awesome with a built in USB hub!

I may be wrong, but I think the mono switch is for input monitoring. Otherwise, the 1/2 inputs would output as r/l in the monitors or headphones. Mono allows you to listen for phase issues, while stereo lets you hear the stereo separation. I am at work and don't have the unit in front of me, so I'll have to check it out to make sure when i get home.

Anybody done a close test of the preamps/converters in this unit, and where it lies on the scale of quality in its price range? Would be most interested to get some sense of its performance in comparison to its competitors.

Now that I used it some more, I'm a bit skeptical. I'm getting some cracks and pops when I have Pro Tools record armed and trying out some guitar stuff through an amp sim. Nothing winds up on the recording, but it's annoying. I'm also having weird issues with Pro Tools projects opening in the wrong sample rate. I don't know, it might be Pro Tools having a laugh at me but it never happened with the Mbox 2.

Anyone else=?

Frantique - I've been working with it for about a week. I'm running it off a Vaio laptop, 32bit, 4gb mem, dual core (circa 2008). I'm using (DAW) Studio One V2 (2.0.4 rather than 2.0.5).

I'm using a test song with about 16 audio tracks, about three and half minutes. Each has one or two plugins. At first, I was getting all the funky static, freezing, and snap, crackle, pops. I then removed any and all Services that wasn't needed, shut off WAN/LAN, disabled other sound card(s). In a word - down to the absolute bone requirements.

The Performance meter in the DAW hovers around 47% and spikes up to 80+ and gets into the RED but it is not (currently) freezing or creating the horrible static. There are the occasional pops but they're very faint and the recordings are clean. So far I get through the song countless times without problems.

As you know there have been complaints about the crackling. Someone got a reply from Akai that unit should be serviced (see thread):

Akai EIE Pro - Crackling Noise all the time

I'm going to continue to stress this baby because, so far, I'm liking it. Yes, I have to reconfigure the laptop to get things done - but that's OK since I want to use this for more remote usage (i.e. it's not my main music machine).

I haven't yet tried the MIDI or more than one input at a time. This weekend I think I'll completely load it up: MIDI, Inserts, load up the USBs, and a couple of simultaneous inputs and see how it goes. I've got a few weeks to make up my mind. I'll check back in with results.

Good luck!
