Simple Wireless Or MIDI Remote DAW Transport Control?

Hi,

Windows 7. Cubase 6.

Sorry if this is another 'noob' question. I have 2 separate recording rooms away from the DAW. They're wired for MIDI and audio and ethernet.

When I'm recording myself, what I do is.....
1) Start the pre-roll @ the DAW 16 bars ahead

2) Run to the tracking room, grab the cans and hope I got there in time to start punching in.

Is there a cheap/simple 'start/stop' button I can add for punching in---either wireless or some add-on to MIDI?

Sadly, I have neither iPad or smartphone---but I'd consider getting -something- like an iPOD if there was a reliable 'app' for this... But I can't see spending $500 just to start/stop.

Or maybe there's a clever way to add a footswitch to a MIDI controller to start/stop recording? (Like if I hit C0 it starts recording and D0 stops?)

TIA,

---JC

A wireless Numeric pad (or whole keyboard) is a good cheap option.

Or just a USB Numeric pad.

(I'm assuming your DAW uses the numeric keys for stop/start, like Cubase).

not cheap

wireless typing keyboard

i use this wireless keyboard all over my studio...sitting on couch and cuing tracks....sitting in another room and recording drum clips.

The best non controller controller I've found. Rechargable for years.

Keys are fragile like laptop keys. I haven't lost any important ones yet.

Anyone got specific recommendations?

I had a Logitech wireless mouse/keyboard 3-4 years ago and it was -awful-. (It needed to be 're-trained' every day or two).

Thanks,

If you have an iPad or an iPhone or iPod touch try using AC-7. I use it as a remote with my iPad 2 for Sonar and it emulates a mackie controller. It has modes for pretty much every DAW so you might give that a shot. It works great for me.

The Frontier Design Tranzport is no longer manufactured or supported, I think, though I could have got that wrong. Those are really cool devices.

I think going with a wi-fi capable IPod touch will really fit the bill for you. There are some reasonably priced apps that will allow you to control basic functions of your DAW remotely and even tweak some of features like EQs and volume controls. Just tap the button while connected over wi-fi and you're recording! Plan to go the same route on my Android device when recording drums
