LogicPro 7.1 on a Silverface?

Hi,

I was wondering how LogicPro 7.1 would behave on a G4 Silverface 1Ghz (single processor) with 512Ghz Ram? Can this combination work OK, or is it wise to upgrade the Ram?

Regards,

Roger

Unless you are only going to be recording audio tracks or midi hardware tracks and using very few plug-ins this machine is too under powered to run Logic 7.

OK. So, a simple song with drums from ultrabeat, the bass, organ, d6 and piano from the Logic plugs will not be possible?

Regards,

Roger

I run those in a lab I manage and they work fine as long as you are not running video along with it. You can get a pretty good amount of stuff going, but not huge sessions.

I have a dual 1Ghz and 1.5GB and I would not go below 1.5GB memory. I would not like to see a single proc running Logic. It would be scary. Especially to mix a single song with many tracks. It would be sick.

Save your money on the old school ram upgrade, and purchase a dual core mac mini pro with 1.5GB instead-- you will be able to run plugins and have a decent track count.

Hi there,

It's not that I'm gonna purchase a G4 single 1Ghz. It's just that I have standing one here around, so I thought why not putting LP7.1 on it (which I have lying around here too) and see if you can do something with it. I will not use it for mixing etc. It's just to be able to have some songs in it using the LP7.1 plugs. This mostly to be able to exchange songs with others who use LP7.1 instead of Nuendo and Cubase as I do...

Regards,

Roger

I think you might be surprised by what you'd get away with on a 1Ghz machine and Logic 7.1. Logic is, after all, THE best CPU performer on a mac. If you stay away from too many instances of space designer and hogs like sculpture you should be fine. The RAM may be marginal but it's enough for the program - if you start sticking too many EXS24 instances with big samples you may be in trouble. RAM for a G4 is dirt cheap now anyway.

Give it a go.

G4 and LP7

been using a G4 450DP for five years.
you can get a lot out of these older machines.
my main issue is track playback stopping when the disc o/l's.

i will eventually upgrade - when apple get it's act together with the intel cpu's and towers. sometime next year.

Oh, if you just want to tinker aroung and record some tracks like a tape deck with minimal plugins, then sure, it will do the trick. The large esx24 sample sets like the piano might have problems playing, but you can most certainly use the ES-2 synth stuff as an alternative.

And no, mixing would not be the best on this configuration.

Rock on--
