ANYONE KNOW HOW TO GET SAMPLES FROM OLD AKAI S1000 FLOPPY'S INTO..

I'm trying to get some samples of some old S1000 floppy disks i found lurking around, i'm trying to get them into my Mac somehow using an old imation USB super disk drive? Is this possible? i wonder if this program CDXTRACT would help? I used it a while back to import S1000 CD's and maybe it would see the Super Drive with S1000 floppy? When i inseret the floppy's nothing appears on my desktop? But i doubt OSX (Panther) would recognise Akai formatted disks, but maybe through a third party application?

Any clues? These samples would be good to hear again...

Thanx.

Zilla.

The Mac itself won't recognise AKAI formatted disks.
However, if you insert the disk and use Logic's EXS24 AKAI import function it WILL see an AKAI disk.
I've not tried it with floppies only CD's, and it worked fine.
No reason why a floppy wouldn't work.

The AKAI import function (UVI Extract) in MachFive also works great.

Not got any experience of any other applications, but in answer to your question- yes it is possible.

What about this...

They also do Translator Free which is free (duh) but I don't know what the limitations are.

Thanks guys...

I'm still trying, CDXtraxt won't see the samples on the floopy, appears to check the SuperDisk drive but doesn't show the samples for conversion?

The Chicken systems app is PC only!

Maybe peak or an older version of CDXtract, back i go....

Anyone got ideas, please share.. would be good to get this old school shit up and running again, can't even remember where the samples on these disc's came from!!

Onward and upward...

Peace.

Translator cannot do this... i emailed them, no Floppy support on Macs apparantly..

When i put in an Akai CD i have to select ignore from the initialize dialogue but CDXtract can read it...

Unfortunatly the same cannot be said for floppy's it would seem...

I get the feeling there is no solution..

except dig up my old S1000, Old Mac and scuzzy cable! Ouch!

Thanx to those who tried to help..

you should be able to read the disks in raw mode
or use a pc to image the disks

Back when I had to do this, i borrowed an S1000, connected it to the mac via SCSI,
loaded some old program like Alchemy (this is on OS9, of course) or something else that had S1000 SCSI support, and saved the samples out of there as .aiff files. Primitive, but effective. In my experience, UVIExtract and ChickenSys are far from perfect when it comes to accurately translating stuff from one format to another- there's always some weirdness or alteration in the final data that makes it not like its original form. I've never gotten them to work 100% successfully.

Best thing to do is get the Samples on to a Zip Disk and then attach a usb zip drive to the Mac and make a toast image of it and then use Cdxtract to translate the disk image.

Thanx for help and suggestions....

Think i'll dig out my old S1000 and Desktop G4, re-unite them one last time via scuzzy as suggested....

I just assumed there would be a handy lil app out there to read akai floppy's..

Oh well.... there's a tiny hole in the market out there for a suitably skilled shareware coder....lol

Developers take note! It wouldbe very useful..

Thanx to all...

There's a PC application called AkaiDisk which allows to read and write to/from Akai floppy disks.

Here's the link: http://mda.smartelectronix.com/akai/index.htm

Thanks again..still no mac support for akaidisk tho...

I'm still trying...lol My virtual PC on my Mac won't see the superdisk floppy drive though..

It's a funny old game... if Macs can read Akai CD's via CDXtract and the "ignore" dialogue box, then why not floppy's?

Anymore suggestions are most welcome...and thanks again to those who responded thus far..

Peace.

simply because mac OS will not read the non standard akai formated disks. however aslong as apple havnt crippled the drive its self it should be able to read it even if mac os doesnt know what to do with it.

have you tried to read the disk in raw mode and save it as an image?

Sorry to be niave but i don't know what 'raw' mode is or how to do this...

The Akai floppy is in an Imation SuperDisk USB floppy drive and i get an 'initialize, eject, ignore' dialogue box, which i have so far clicked ignore, however this does not make it mount on my desktop anyway...

I'm still determined to find a way, so if you can explain raw mode and disk imaging i may have a chance..

Thanks as ever....

Peace.

raw mode reads the disk in its lowest possible form, which makes any disk formatted or not readable

i havnt done this on OS X so i am assuming apple didnt rip out the modules
there are image programs available but it is just as simple to do it from a console. open the root console (if not in root you may not have access to the device)
type dd if=/dev/fd1 of=/image/disk1.img
/dev/fd1 may need to be replaced with whatever the device is called, being a USB drive it may be /dev/usb or /dev/usb0 or /dev/usb1 etc keeping in mind how many otehr usb devices you have connected which includes munde keyboad etc
you can all the output file whatever you want.

I agree, I didnt have any problems going back and forth on the PC with AKAIDISK with my S2000. I was downloading waves off the net and saving them to disk in AKAI format and loading them up in my S2000. I cant remember if it allows you to convert to Mac format or not , been a LONG time ago
