Disappearing Hard Drives

I am using a Powerbook G4 and this morning the unit will no longer see my firewire ext. drives. I have 2 different fw drives and even using 2 different cables the machine won't see them.

Any ideas anyone?

I've been having the same problem with my Maxtor FW drives (2 of them) suddenly disappearing on my PC with XP professional. An IT guy at work said that it may be an XP service pack 2 issue (I cant find anything on MS site about it). I'm surprised to hear that it's happening on Mac's also!!
Any idea's out there?

I've heard of this happening for both machines...

In a PC, this has happened when the PCs power goes off rapidly and before the external drive is "unmounted" (In my friend's case, a power outage). The disk went bye-bye. Not certain of the technical terms here, but whatever keeps the disk's file allocation system (directory?) available to the OS disappeared. "Get Data Back" worked.

This is where I heard of it in Macs:

see "The disappearing Firewire drive" towards the end.

Hope you get your stuff back. File loss is horrible.
