Ghetto/Easy way to quiet my G4?

Hey all,

I record in my bedroom, as a lot of us do here (I should perhaps post this in Low-End, actually). Does anyone know a cheap way to isolate my G4 so that I can track near it? I would rather not go in another room if I don't have to, so anyone have any tips (e.g. putting a blanket over it, etc.)?

Thanks!

wrap a duvet around it, but make sure the front and ESPECIALLY the backare totally free

specifically where the psu blows out, and if you have the MDD g4's with the windtunnel intakes at the front , then them too

basically just make sure the front and back are totally unaffected and you're all good to go man

That's going to add to the heat of the computer though, and make the fan blow harder. I've found that if I even set something on top of my G4 it heats it up.

What I've done is bought some extension cables for USB, Firewire, and my LCD monitors. I put the G4 in the closet of the room where my studio is. This doesn't eliminate the noise but it does cut it down quite a bit.

I was thinking the same thing.

At one point Apple was offering quieter PSU's for the MDD ones, because they are just about the loudest computers that Apple has ever made (and thus i'm lucky enough to have one).

I have mine sitting right now in an empty rack, and i'm going to try and close up the front and backs of the rack, and put a temperature monitor on it, with some slow fans in the back that would pull through almost a mini HVAC type ducting that i'm going to make.

I'll try and post pictures soon.

yeah go with longer cables, and put it in another room. Why would you want to keep it close to you?

If you can get it into a closet -- say by using keyboard and monitor extender cables -- that may be the best way to go.

BTW... is it one of the 'mirror door' Dual G4's? At one point Apple was making a replacement power supply available for little more than shipping (in response to a myriad of complaints -- apparently there was a very wide range of noise levels with that model/generation, some were relatively quiet and others were very definitely not.)

[Looking back up at the posts I didn't read before orginally posting this I realize that -- once again -- I am superfluous. Ah well.]

I had the same problem... the solution is big, aluminum, silver, heavy, expensive and 1 digit higher than a G4... (and lets you use a lot more plug-ins!)

my sympathies!

Hmm.. seems like putting it in a closet seems most feasable, however the Digi 001 cable is (to my knowledge) non extendable...I guess that would have to reside in the closet as well..
