VSL downloads vs DVDs?

This thread seems to say that the download instruments aren't "really" identical to the physical collections, but more like "functionally identical" in the sense that the omitted samples/layers are generally inaudible.

some articulations are missing. EVen if you get the extended download version.

Does that hold for all instruments?

half-step samples in Bb Trumpet? - VSL Community

This thread says the downloads are not chromatically sampled. If the download says something like 3GB, does that mean the stuff on the DVDs is even larger?
