Thread Starter | Organizing VST effects
I am wondering why DAWs don't allow users to organize VST plug-ins into custom folders. Is this a limitation of the VST technology? I was not able to do this in Cubase and I am not able to do this in Studio One now. Most I could do is hide plugs in Cubase that I didn't need. My friend says that he can't do it in Ableton nor in Logic whether it's VST or AU. He says you can do it in Reaper, however... It seems so basic to me to be able to do this, and I am just wondering why major DAWs are unable to have this function. What's holding them back? |

Cubase allows you to organise by Manufacturer. However, I do remember owning Cubase on a PC pre 2000 and I could organise the VSTs any way I wanted. However, manufacturers these days tag their VSTs which bypasses folder hierachy. Reaper obviously bypasses the tags. It's really not going to kill your workflow, you end up using the few VSTs that work for you anyway. We all do. |

If you organize your plugins into folders within the main VST folder specified in Preferences, Ableton Live will locate them. Sent from my overclocked calculator using Gearslutz.com

| You can definitely do this in Cubase, both on mac and windows. Create sub folders within VST plugin folder. I've been doing this since Cubase VST days.

In Cubase I organize them any way I like, I have custom folders and everything is alway reachable with a minimum of fuss. I was under the impression you could do this in any DAW . Why wouldn't manufacturers implement this as standard? Very weird to me

Is there a way to do this inside Cubase? Or only by organizing the VST folder structure in windows? What version of Cubase is everyone using that can do this? I have version 5 which I don't use anymore as I switched to StudioOne, but I don't remember being able to do this in the program.

I always used to sort them into folders onto the PC, was pretty handy to do really. I know quite a few people want the functionality on OSX though! Makes much more sense to sort them by plugin type rather than manufacturer. Would be great to be able to merge them with a DAW's stock plugins too. It's like when you install a piece of software and it insists you want it in a folder named after the company. No need really, unless it's a full software suite. Smacks a bit of "Oh, you're definitely going to want to buy ALL of our software..."

reaper really doesnt need "organization", just type part of the plug name and there it is.

you can definitely do this in ableton not sure about the other daw's since i don't own them. I have them in folders all the time. I"m not sure if you can make the folders right in the browser but if you store the .dll files inside folders in your plugin folders it'll show the folders in the browser.

Hi Just to note, there are VST2 and VST3 plugins. With VST2 plugins, you can manage it within the Windows explorer to organize it as you like. With VST3 plugins, there's no way to do it. You have to live with the manufacturers set-up, stored somewhere in the plugin code. As well waiting for a possibility to sort all the plugins within Cubase 6 not only as "manufacturer", but also as "type". Cheers |

So simple. Cubase = Go to program files, Steinberg, Cubase, VST plugins. Inside of VST plugins you´ll see all plugins folders. Just create there a folder = AHHH then put any plugins you want there. Your AHHH folder will appear in Cubase plugins list folder |
