Q on consolidation of tracks on Cubase 6

Hi guys

I'm new to the digital recording world and have settled on Cubase [6] to use as my DAW. I've been able to figure out most of what I need using the manual but I can't seem to find an answer to this:

I track to this product but I don't mix with it. I take my tracks to another studio that has all the outboard toys one could want. His studio uses Potools. So in order to take my tracks there I need to perform the function I've seen referred to as consolidation.

Of course this word appears no where in the Cubase manual.

If I'm correct Cubase is using something called "bounce" to do the same function but every time I open the Audio menu it's not lit [darker] so can't be selected so I haven't been able to try it out.

I noticed in some other system they had something called "merge" and you just selected a track and clicked merge and--poof---there you go.

So what am I missing here [and why can't Cubase use the same words/terms other companies do?].

I think I understand the export thing [to another HD] but this function needs to be done so all the tracks show up right. But you knew that didn't you?

Any help would be---well, helpful.

Thanks

Why? Who knows the right name for the concept?

It's all in the Op Manual
Chapter 38
Export Audio Mixdown
specifically p 486 Channel Batch Export

Thanks rev9. That's exactly what I needed. I knew it would be simple if I could just find it.

Famousbass: It's not a concept. It's a function And yes, they have the right to call it whatever they want. But consider needing to get your appendix taken out but you call it a fargidillion and the doctors can't understand what the hell you're talking about. That could get real messy [you never know what you'll be missing]

Thanks for the chapter number.

make sure all your regions/tracks have the EXACT SAME start point, then bounce selection, rename the files, and export selected files.... should tak eless than 15 minutes

No need to.
Cubase can batch process the whole rendering function with a few clicks.
You don't have to check each track start point, the whole song start end points is all that's needed.
My personal recommendation is the pick a whole number bar numbers for start/end points so relocation on a different DAW is easy.

My favorite tip I picked up is to:
capitalise the names of GROUP TRACKS and
use lower case for audio, instrument and VSTi tracks.
Cubase prefixes effects with FX and number.
When the batch render folder is opened one day all the different types of files are very easy to see and get started, even by a stranger.
And don't forget to export the MIDI and include it in the archive. It's very easy to overlook but not a big deal as you have the audio.

My pleasure.
Sure, DAW is a recent artform and it's not rocket surgery.
There is no professional society respected by all drawing on the Greek for the final word on nomenclature.

The video is fine but has some unnecessary steps imo.

The easiest process is:

  • Select ALL your audio material in the project (Ctrl/Cmd+A)
  • Press P (This will automatically place locators on selection
  • (Check out if you have to extend the right locator to preserve reverb tails etc)
  • File, Export, Audio Mixdown
  • Select batch export and select all the tracks you want to export
  • Choose a folder.
  • Done

Well... not to be a stick in the mud but there are considerations when exporting stems in a DAW like do you want to print the current fader / pan values? I don't have Cubase 6 but IIRC, stems are post fader / post pan.

So you might want to save the song, reset the mixer, then stem your channels out. Or just consolidate the audio tracks on the timeline. If it's all audio, you don't need to batch export, you can consolidate the selection right on the timeline.
