Your aversion to OSX is well documented. Please take your pc trolling elsewhere. You're not being helpful.

As for putting a second drive inside a mac book pro...

The internal SATA connection is inherently better (faster) than firewire or USB2. It is more stable, won't be accidentally knocked out (no external cables) and doesn't require external power. So, it just makes things easier / less hassle. But they take a bit of DIY (you need to install it, or get a company to do it for you - apple will not do it themselves)

The disadvantage is that you loose your internal DVD drive - but you can install it in an external usb enclosure. Personally, I use the second drive MUCH much more than the DVD - so this just makes sense to me. YMMV.

As for the drive? Internal, I can't rate the WD Black 750GB 7200rpm 2.5" drives highly enough. I now have 4 of them in various machines.

As for external drives - I'd be buying an enclosure and sticking in your own drive - as this is the only way you can be certain that the drive you are getting is the one you want.

Currently, I'm using all Hitachi 3TB 7200TB drives - which rate around 120MB/sec I/O (a little higher from memory) when used on an internal SATA bus (or eSATA). The WD Black 2TB drives are also excellent.

The size (capacity) of the drive overall is less important than the capacity of each individual platter. The denser the platter, the faster the drive (in general!) So, a 2 platter 1TB drive will be a similar speed to a 4 platter 2TB drive (all 500GB platters) but faster than a 500GB drive with 2 platters, and slower than a 1.5TB drive with 2 platters (750MB/platter). Its all about density.

Having said all that - unless you are using a fast protocol like eSATA or thunderbolt for the drive connections to your laptop, MOST 7200rpm 3.5" hard drives will saturate a FW800 connection. Seek times will be slightly different, but given your use scenario, I doubt you will notice much difference. Large cache levels DO help as well.

Don't go for the WD Green drives - and I'm not convinced about the WD blue drives either. I have not been keeping up with seagates recently.

HTH. You might have to do a bit of trawling thru tomshardware.com forums (or similar) before making your final purchasing decision.

Brendan.

Thread Starter
thanx again Brendan and all

actually I checked out and my seagate external hard drive is 7200 rpm 3.5
this is what I have:
Seagate External HDD--expansion ST310005EXA101-RK(500GB/1TB,7200 RPM, black,3.5" cache:16MB) :: Discount Seagate External hdd For Sale

not sure about the platters you are talking about though...

I think it might be up for the job, but I'll still run the black magic test to check out. I'll let you guys know if there's a difference

tnx

This HD will be fine.
Honestly, I've been using FireWire400 harddrives for years now, and the speed of my drives have never been the problem. As long as you're using a dedicated not too slow HD to record onto, you should be just fine.

Just recently I recorded an entire band with full drum mics and stuff, two amp sims, Reverb and vocals with my humble white 2009 MacBook (not even a MBpro), and the external FiWi400 HD was totally cool with it.
