G4 stopped reading CD?

Whenever I insert a CD (music or data) into the G4, I now get the Toast window saying the disc is not readable and asking if I want to initialize the disc.

Since it worked before, I'm assuming something got turned on or off somewhere along the line.

I've got some updates to load and need to get the CD player/burner back online. BTW, it's a Plextor and has worked fine until now.

A good bet is that your drive is toast (as it were.) There aren't too many ways to screw up the config.

I just bought a CD/DVD FW drive that writes every format on the planet for $150. Simpler drives are no doubt cheaper.

Bad drive. I had that happen on one of my new G5's do the same. replacement drive can be found for like $50 DVD+-RW/CDRW check the sony one's at shopper.com (Apple replaced mine for free as it was less than 3 months old)
