| Lives for gear | Exactly. Whilst buying it now may grant the license for when it eventually comes out, its a shame PC VST users won't have any opportunity to actually demo the thing before the special offer ends.

I think this means you don't have to buy it without demoing it first just to take advantage of the sale. I think the sale will go on (or show up again) when the PC VST goes out. I'd wait.

I think the whole coupon thing is a pretty generous move. Anyone who bought the plug-in at $300 did so believing it was worth that price. So throwing us back some store credit is just extra gravy... and a good customer service move. Customers like gravy! Leigh

Really enjoying the plug in. How is everybody using it? I find it most magical on the stereo bus. Great on Bass and soft synth, too. It´s cool to EQ with a plug in, followed by the UBK-1. Makes extreme settings sound really good. |

| I'm usually not bad on #3 but I'm sitting on some soon-to-be-released mixes as I want to try UBK-1 on them but I also have to wait for PC VST. They don't have to be out the door until the end of February so fingers crossed!

Would be good to know before missing the sale altogether - would be nice to get another payday in before another music making purchase as well! Cheers, Jay

| A Mini Review of the UBK1
A Mini Review of the UBK1 I've finally had a chance to play with this plug a subtantial ammount. On the whole, I'm impressed with all the different layers of "polish" you can add. People are going to find it very easy to get to that "like a record" tone with this thing. Its not just compression, it can tonally put things really in the pocket with minimal other processing. People should think of this tool as something that can add movement, and a finished sound to any source, but not necessarily all the THD and grit you want if you like a lot of it. After playing with it on some uncompressed sources last night I'm confidant though that it could handle all my compression needs if I didn't want a ton of grit in the sound. I also enjoy taking sources to wacky sounding places. This plug could provide some of that, but I'm certainly not going to shy away from my outboard for creative manipulation. The amazing thing about the poish it can add is that I wouldn't feel I had to compromise if I were to just ITB mix a song with what I'm hearing from this plug, and in the past I would always feel that doing all my compression ITB would negatively affect the tone and dimension of sources. I'm not hearing any audiable penalties as with most other high end plugs that do similar things. The signal comes out sounding different but I can't hear any tonal degradation. This can't be overstated. Its the single reason I'm going to grab for this for itb dynamic and somewhat tonal control more than anything else I own. I have a modest but respectable number of other native high end plugs to compare with. The fact that I'm hearing no degredation means I can get really creative without constantly weighing the balance of how far I should go without mucking things up. Density is a really interesting thing that I've never played with before, but its something i hear in a lot of older analog recordings and wanted to capture. I had never really put my finger on exactly what it was before, and now the plug has helped me recognise the sound. The result is subtle, but feels crucial even though I've spent a short time with it. I can not get this effect with any other equipment I own. I could see myself putting a little "density" on every track even if I didn't need the UBK1 for any other processing. I can see this fitting into my general work flow in the ITB mix phase when I'm down to the final 30% of tone and compression shaping. I typically have the luxury of using my outboard for a bunch of work, so why not, but in a time pinch, I would not lose any sleep over not doing DA-AD trips and mixing with this plug ITB. This along with the unique features on the plug is what in my mind is going to make it a must have to anyone that demos it. Thanks for making another cool really creative tool Greg! You've got a winner here! Russell

Thanks for the thorough review, though it's making it even harder to wait for the VST to drop! It sounds like what I've been waiting for as I've waded through plugins for years trying to find something that reduces "edge" and adds "weight" like analogue recording did but nothing's cut it so far.

spent all afternoon and evening checking it out on a torture test mix. especially having fun with it on drums. sprung for it... one question... why does adding compression increase the volume? is it adding makeup gain automatically? ...and would love to have the option of detanted knobs for repeatability.

Man, Gregory, I just have to add my voice to the growing throng of people gushing over this plug. It really sounds gorgeous. And it really is remarkable how much more "alive" it makes individual elements feel. And it's awesome on the 2-buss, too. It really does bring out a certain 3D quality to an instrument and makes things sound deeper front-to-back, which I always think is one of the hardest things to do in a mix. It's so versatile, too! I really think I could mix a whole album with this as my only compressor if I had to. I'm still glad I have other compressor plugins to choose from, but the UBK-1 is just a monster in versatility, man. I can't say enough good things about it. I used the demo on 3 different tracks I was mixing for a client, and after the first one, I was already saying "damn! I didn't want to have to spend more money on a plug right now," but by the time I used it on the next mix, I knew I was in. On that first track, I had actually already mixed the drums, but I went back and tried the UBK-1 and was able to replace my entire mix chain for the drum bus with just the UBK-1 alone. Seriously, I'm not kidding. I was able to replace the whole chain with just your plug. And it sounded way better with the UBK-1. It was fast, too. Not much tweaking. I really appreciate how much it makes you listen, as well. The slightly unconventional operating procedure helps shake off old habits, and I think it's really cool to have a plug that doesn't try to simply emulate something from the analog world, but instead makes use of the DAW workflow to do some things that really can't be done in the analog world. Don't get me wrong, I love some of the emulations I have, but I really appreciate a fresh perspective on what plugins can do well. Kudos, Gregory! You should be very proud of what your team has achieved here.

| $149 Sale Extended, Mac VST drops Wednesday!
First, thanks so much to everyone for the glowing reviews and feedback... it's always the same, when I develop a product and I'm playing with it in my own space, I think it's the most amazing thing ever. But at the same time I have no idea if anyone else will agree, or even give a damn, because the way I work and think about sound is, well, unconventional. So I know this is gonna drive the Windows guys nuts, but the Mac VST is ready and rather than wait to release it with the PC version I wanted to drop *something* and show that we really are busting our asses trying to make this happen, and we are making progress. Windows VST is just plain tricky, with a plugin this complex there are 5,000x as many "gotcha's" in the coding. So Mac VST will be folded into release 1.0.6 and it will officially be available this Wednesday, Feb. 22. Finally, we're extending the $149 sale because it's not fair that VST users be penalized for our inability to release all the formats at the same time. I was really hoping to have Win VST done by now but it's still breaking our balls, so as usual we adjust what we're doing to accommodate reality. That's all for now, thanks again for the amazing support! Gregory Scott - ubk |
