Kernel Panics

Anybody know how I can find out what causes my Mac to crash?

I got a panic.log but how do I know what's what and causing the crashes?

My mac is starting to crash more and more. Usually during simple non-intensive things like surfing, using Photoshop.

Arghhhh

RAM problem perhaps? Find a free utility to test your RAM...

Run the apple hardware test that comes with your OSX cds. That'll help you narrow it down if it's a hardware problem for sure.

The leading causes I have found for kernel panics when the computer isn't doing anything CPU intensive is one of three things.

1. Corrupt Software
2. Bad Ramm
3. Bad video card

hope this helps.

Buy DiskWarrior and let it do its job.

A true lifesaver, esp. when you notice an increasement of kernel panics.

Ehm, before all these things, I would do these steps in order:

- check if you have any additional device driver you don't really need or which can be conflictual (I had similar problems time ago with a usb wireless adaptor ,I removed its software and I solved; you should check the log to see what causes the kernel panic, and in particular where it talks about the thread crashed)

- boot from the OS cd and run Disk Utility on your system disk. This checks the hd (if you find problems here you could go with the Disk Warrior route as said, but to me your description does not sound like a hd problem).

- use the hardware test cd you got with your mac, boot from it and let it do its job (even if boring). This makes several tests (Ram, VideoCard, etc.)

Let us know and good luck :-)
